    Abstract
    Der gegenwärtige Wandel zur Informationsgesellschaft betrifft auch die Bibliotheken. Schlagworte wie "virtuelle Bibliothek" oder "digitale Bibliothek" tauchen immer häufiger in der Bibliothekslandschaft auf. Die Bücher-Bibliotheken" werden nicht verschwinden, aber sie müssen sich der Herausforderung der Informationsgesellschaft stellen und ihre Rolle neu definieren. Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken nehmen sich bereits seit einiger Zeit der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien an, aber auch für die Öffentlichen Bibliotheken besteht Handlungsbedarf. Das Land Salzburg hat deshalb eine Studie mit dem Titel "Die Digitale Bibliothek" bei der Techno-Z Fachhochschule Forschung und Entwicklung GmbH in Auftrag gegeben, die Strategien für die Weiterentwicklung der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken des Landes im Informationszeitalter entwickeln soll. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie sind nicht nur für die Öffentlichen Bibliotheken im Land Salzburg von Interesse, sondern betreffen auch andere Regionen und deren Bibliothekslandschaft. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage haben wir uns daher zu einem Sonderdruck des Heftes 15 der "Materialien zur Weiterbildung in Salzburg" mit den wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Studie entschlossen. So liegt neben dem umfangreichen Endbericht eine Kurzfassung vor. Diese Kurzfassung haben wir für Sie via Internet zugänglich gemacht.

    Abstract
    Der Einsatz von Online-Datenbanken für interne Arbeiten wie Erwerbung, Katalogisierung, Leihverkehr und Ausleihverbuchuing ist in den Public Libraries der USA mittlerweile Standard. Die externe Nutzung von Online-Datenbanken für den Reference Service dagegen beschränkte sich bis vor kurzem auf mittelgroße und große Public Libraries, doch können durch die Schaffung von Verbünden neuerdings auch kleinere Public Libraries ihren Benutzern diesen Service anbieten. Die <Handhabungspraxis, die oft im krassen Gegensatz zur Theorie steht, und die Qualität des Online Reference Service sind von Bibliothek zu Bibliothek recht unterschiedlich. Belebendes Element in einem stagnierenden Online-Markt ist die Tatsache, daß mehr und mehr Bibliotheken dazu übergehen, eigene Datenbanken zu produzieren.     Abstract
    Kanadische Kolleginnen haben eine Evaluierungsmethode entwickelt, mit welcher die Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes komplexer beurteilt werden kann als bisher und die darüberhinaus konkrete Hinweise gibt, wie der Auskunftsdienst verbessert werden könnte. Hierbei werden die Methoden Test und verdeckte Beobachtung kombiniert. Kriterium für die Beurteilung des Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes ist nicht die Zahl der richtig beantworteten Fragen, sondern die Zufriedenheit der Benutzer, und die hängt mehr als man erwarten könnte, von der Qualität der Interaktion im Auskunftsdienst ab. Diese kanadischen Erfahrungen wurden bei einer entsprechenden Evaluierung im Stuttgarter Raum bestätigt, die von Studierenden der HBI Stuttgart durchgeführt wurde. In weniger als 50% der Testfälle kam es zu einer nützlichen bzw. zufriedenstellenden Antwort. Dabei spielten mangelnde kommunikative Kompetenz und die fehlende Interviewkompetenz eine besonders große Rolle

    Abstract
    Es wird ein Konzept zur Intensivierung der fachlichen Auskunftstätigkeit und zum Ausbau von auskunftsunterstützenden Informationsbeziehungen zwischen bestehenden Informationseinrichtungen vorgestellt. Die zur Zeit beobachtbaren Vorbehalte der kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen gegenüber einer intensiveren Nutzung elektronischer Fachinformation werden angesprochen, es werden die tatsächlich artikulierten Informationsbedürfnisse im mittelständischen Bereich charakterisiert und aus diesen Rahmenbedingungen ein Vorschlag zur Harmonisierung und Optimierung bereits vorhandener Auskunftsdienste abgeleitet. Der Autor beschreibt charakteristische Funktionene und Komponenten von Auskunftsagenturen und nennt die Harmonisierung von Auskunftsstandards als wesentliche Voraussetzung zur Qualitätssicherung im Auskunftsbereich. Dabei wird der Aufbau informaller Netzwerke zwischen Auskunftsstellen als besonders wichtig für eine übergreifende, anfrager-orientierte und effiziente Auskunftstätigkeit herausgestellt
