    Abstract
Glister's 16 chapters, plus an appendix of Internet providers, takes readers on a dizzying view of Internet. In the first quarter of the book, you pick up a global perspective on Internet, while in the second, you learn how to use Internet for your own personal devices with mail, FTP (file transfer protocol), and telnet. In the second half, you master how to take advantage of Internet resources from electronic journals to WAIS databases. Overall, Gilster commendably organizes Internet facts and experiences well, making them accessible to both beginner and old-timer alike. If there's only one book on Internet that you can afford on your shelf, this is your best choice.

    Abstract
In this age of an open Internet, it is easy to forget that every American information industry, beginning with the telephone, has eventually been taken captive by some ruthless monopoly or cartel. With all our media now traveling a single network, an unprecedented potential is building for centralized control over what Americans see and hear. Could history repeat itself with the next industrial consolidation? Could the Internet-the entire flow of American information-come to be ruled by one corporate leviathan in possession of "the master switch"? That is the big question of Tim Wu's pathbreaking book. As Wu's sweeping history shows, each of the new media of the twentieth century-radio, telephone, television, and film-was born free and open. Each invited unrestricted use and enterprising experiment until some would-be mogul battled his way to total domination. Here are stories of an uncommon will to power, the power over information: Adolph Zukor, who took a technology once used as commonly as YouTube is today and made it the exclusive prerogative of a kingdom called Hollywood . . . NBC's founder, David Sarnoff, who, to save his broadcast empire from disruptive visionaries, bullied one inventor (of electronic television) into alcoholic despair and another (this one of FM radio, and his boyhood friend) into suicide . . . And foremost, Theodore Vail, founder of the Bell System, the greatest information empire of all time, and a capitalist whose faith in Soviet-style central planning set the course of every information industry thereafter. Explaining how invention begets industry and industry begets empire-a progress often blessed by government, typically with stifling consequences for free expression and technical innovation alike-Wu identifies a time-honored pattern in the maneuvers of today's great information powers: Apple, Google, and an eerily resurgent AT&T. A battle royal looms for the Internet's future, and with almost every aspect of our lives now dependent on that network, this is one war we dare not tune out. Part industrial exposé, part meditation on what freedom requires in the information age, The Master Switch is a stirring illumination of a drama that has played out over decades in the shadows of our national life and now culminates with terrifying implications for our future.

    Abstract
This paper is a summary of a final report that assessed the impact of providing Internet connectivity to rural public libraries. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine impacts on the librarians, libraries, local communities, and the larger Internet community as a results of Internet connectivity. The results of this study indicate that a number of important impacts and benefits resulted from the Internet connections, that such an approach is technological feasible, and that the librarians in the study were able to master the skills and competencies required. The paper describes critical success factors for public libraries connecting rural public libraries to the Internet

    Abstract
Highlights 2 problems with thinking of the Internet as a virtual library. Documents on the Internet, unlike books in a library, are difficult to catalogue, Internet holdings can change by the minute, and 'books' can disappear off the shelf without warning leaving scholars unable to verify cited sources. Sets out strategies to adopt, including: printing out sources or saving to hard disc; opt for signed articles; gauge the reliability of the material; contact the web master if problems arise. A major problem concerns bibliographic description and the actual, physical form of cited Internet references. Recommends 2 major guides for college writing: The Modern Language Association (MLA) Handbook for Writers of Research Papers; and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Includes actual samples of citations from electronic mail; web site; FTP; Gopher; Usenet news; or mailing list, taken from the MLA web site (http://www.falcon.eku.edu/honors/beyond-mla)

    Abstract
University libraries invest a massive amount of resources in digitizing information for the Web, yet there is growing concern that much of this information is being underutilized. The present study uses the technology acceptance model (TAM) to investigate university library website resources (ULWR) usage. We categorize users based on academic roles and then analyze them as subgroups in order to observe different adoption patterns across groups. A total of 299 usable responses was collected from four different universities and across three populations: undergraduate, master, and doctoral student/faculty groups. The findings show that different library users indeed access ULWR for different reasons, resulting in a need for tailored managerial efforts. Overall, the extended TAM explains undergraduate students' usage best; the explanatory power of the model is significantly lower for the doctoral student/faculty group. Some of the findings challenge results reported in TAM research in other fields. The unexpected findings may result from the application of the model to a different context. Detailed theoretical implications and managerial guidance are offered.
