    Reviews the consequences of the traditional division of library staff into Technical Services and Reader Services and if decreased interest in cataloguing by library managers. Notes ways in which non cataloguers have had limited involvement in cataloguing. Describes different forms of a holistic approach to library practice and suggests advantages of a holistic work plan. Considers problems of a holistic work plan, advances some solutions and identifies implications for education in cataloguing in library schools

    Considers the problem of applying standard concepts of cataloguing and bibliographic control to electronic media by studying the degree of fit between the Standford Integrated Digital Library Project (SDLP) and both the USMARC format and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Notes the lack of fit of both USMARC and TEI but stresses the advantages of the latter due its lack of dependency on 3 digit tags and its use of SGML conventions

    Abstract
    Papers on the cataloging of electronic resources have focused on electronic journals and Internet resources such as Web sites and not on electronic books. Electronic books are nonserial monographic resources accessed with a computer either directly or remotely. Rules and standards for cataloging electronic resources have changed and continue to change. This article discusses the electronic book as a unique manifestation and provides practical instruction on the application of current cataloging rules. The cataloging elements covered are control fields and variable data fields, including classification, uniform titles, title information, edition information, type and extent of the resource, publication and distribution information, physical description, series statements, notes, and subject analysis.

    Abstract
    Describes the origins of the CATaloguing and Retrieval of Information Over Network Applications (CATRIONA) Study in the BUBL Subject Tree service and nots its aims: to investigate the requirements for developing procedures and applications for cataloguing and retrieval of networked resources (particularly via the Internet); and to explore the feasibility of a collaborative project to develop and integrate them with existing library systems. The project established that a distributed catalogue of networked resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces with information on hard copy resources is already a practical proposition at a basic level.     Abstract
    Reports results of a questionnaire survey of cataloguers, conducted over the AUTOCAT Internet discussion group, to determine those areas of cataloguing for which the Internet is a valuable tool and those areas for which it is not as useful. Respondents indicated 4 areas in which cataloguers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloguing documentation and publications, and authority work. Cataloguers who found access to other libraries' OPACs did so for the following reasons: assigning call numbers and subject headings; finding full cataloguing copy from other libraries; enriching their local catalogue with notes present in records in other libraries; finding copy for foreign language items that cannot be read by library staff; and resolving difficult problems when important parts of the item are missing ar are in disarray. Some cataloguers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient

    Abstract
    Reports the work of the ad hoc task force, coordinated by the Scholarly Communications Project (SCP) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, to discuss the best means of cataloguing the theses palnned to be produced directly in electronic forms by postgraduate students. The main goals were to determine a process for handling electronic theses so that access would be at least as good as for hard copy and to find a way to derive cataloguing information from the electronic text and avoid rekeying as much as possible. An important part of the study was the application of existing MARC format tagged record structures to the new system.     Abstract
    This article analyzes the literature concerning uses of notes in bibliographic records and also certain grammatical conventions used by catalogers to communicate information about the resources they are describing. It shows that these types of data do not aid the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) user tasks in the resource discovery process. It also describes how general notes are addressed in Resource Description Access (RDA), and advocates that cataloging practices involving most general notes and such conventions as bracketing and abbreviations should be discontinued with the widespread use of RDA.

    When an item catalogued in a library's bibliographic database consists of more than a sole work, it may be difficult to link the works to the item. For the retrieval of such works, online catalogues currently rely on contents notes and added entry fields. Suggests 4 criteria for analytic catalogues: a search for a specific work should retrieve all units of that work; it should retrieve only that work without false drops; the search should require only one pass; and the resulting display should clearly collocate all retrieved works. Suggests that 'In' analytics as described in AACR2 rule 13.5A promise better results than analytic entries based on contents notes and added entries

    Abstract
    WorldCat records are clustered into works, and within works, into content and manifestation clusters. A recent project revisited the clustering of collected works that had been previously sidelined because of the challenges posed by their complexity. Attention was given to both the identification of collected works and to the determination of the component works within them. By extensively analysing cast-list information, performance notes, contents notes, titles, uniform titles and added entries, the contents of collected works could be identified and differentiated so that correct clustering was achieved. Further work is envisaged in the form of refining the tests and weights and also in the creation and use of name/title authority records and other knowledge cards in clustering. There is a requirement to link collected works with their component works for use in search and retrieval.
