    Abstract
Godert notes that, having survived a period where we were drowning in information, we seem to be in a period where we are happily surfing the Internet. This communication considers the social implications of this change in fundamental metaphors about our relationship to information. It is first proposed that, though a paradigm shift has not occured, the significance of the change should not be minimized. The similarities and differences between surfing and drowning are then considered. Questions suggested by these similarities and differences are offered for consideration

    Abstract
Attemps to define the term: information; and challenges the assumptions often made about familiar concepts used in evaluating information services. Comments on the fact that do not always report the definitions of the variables they measure, or the circumstances of the measurement, with enough precision to enable others to use them. Illustrates the points with particular reference to the ambiguity evident in the use of the term 'relevance' when applied to information and notes the difficulty in sharing data among information science researchers in the absence of agreed upon standards

    Abstract
An exploratory study was conducted of elementary school children searching a full-text electronic encyclopedia on CD-ROM. 28 third and forth graders and 24 sixth graders conducted 2 assigned searches, one open-ended, the other one closed, after 2 demonstration sessions. Keystrokes captured by the computer and observer notes were used to examine user information-seeking strategies from a mental model perspective. Older searchers were more successful in finding required information, and took less time than younger searchers. No differences in total number of moves were found. Analysis of search patterns showed that novices used a heuristic, highly interactive search strategy. Searchers used sentence and phrase queries, indicating unique mental models for this search system. Most searchers accepted system defaults and used the AND connective in formulating queries. Transition matrix analysis showed that younger searchers generally favoured query refining moves and older searchers fovoured examining title and text moves. Suggestions for system designers were made and future research questions were identified

    Abstract
Addresses the challenge for the library and information profession - in embracing the emerging global information society and the need to manage the changes that come with this. Considers the historical background of public funded libraries of all kinds and the public service ethos which has sustained them over many generations. This ethos is now being challenged in turn by the concept of information as a marketable commodity rather than a right of citizenship. Notes that the forces of the private sector and the market economy are driving the new concept of information as such a marketable commodity, and that there is a clash of values between the earlier traditions which were led by the public sector, and the current situation, driven by the private sector. The conclusion summarises the significance of both a traditional, book-based culture and that of information and communications technologies and draws a comparison between these and the two cultures of C.P. Snow's paper of 1959 (The Reed Lecture).
