- Abstract
- The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors, 14th Edition 2001, has been developed under the auspices of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) of the National Library of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), U.S. Department of Education. Its content reflects ERIC's 34 years of monitoring the educational literature. This 14th edition is the result of ERIC's continued efforts to maintain quality in its controlled vocabulary and to respond to the changing nature of education. As in previous editions, the Thesaurus reflects ERIC's response to the needs of the educational user community. ERIC remains committed to maintaining a Thesaurus that represents the definitive vocabulary for education. The 2001 edition contains 10,773 vocabulary terms, of which 5,963 are main-entry Descriptors and 4,810 are non-indexable USE references or "Dead" terms. New terms not appearing in previous editions include 206 Descriptors and 210 USE references. This edition also reflects several hundred Scope Notes and Cross-reference modifications to earlier Descriptor displays. Again as in the past, the Thesaurus revision has been made possible by the joint efforts and sound judgments of personnel throughout the entire ERIC system responding to both the literature and the users in the field. ERIC vocabulary coordinators, who, as members of the systemwide "Vocabular Review Group," oversee this effort, are listed below.

- An entry is structured so as to present all the essential elements of the indexing system. For each term are given: category, facet, related terms, Dewey interdisciplinary class number and, if necessary; definition or scope notes. Sources used are referenced (an appendix in the book lists those used in the current work). Historical notes indicate whenever a change of term has occurred, thus smoothing the transition from the old lists. In chapter 5, the longest one, detailed instructions with practical examples show how to create entries and how to relate terms; upper relationships must always be complete, right up to the top term, whereas hierarchies of related terms not yet fully developed may remain unfinished. Subject string construction consists in a double operation: analysis and synthesis. The former is the analysis of logical functions performed by single concepts in the definition of the subject (e.g., transitive actions, object, agent, etc.) or in syntactic relationships (transitive relationships and belonging relationship), so that each term for those concepts is assigned its role (e.g., key concept, transitive element, agent, instrument, etc.) in the subject string, where the core is distinct from the complementary roles (e.g., place, time, form, etc.). Synthesis is based on a scheme of nuclear and complementary roles, and citation order follows agreed-upon principles of one-to-one relationships and logical dependence. There is no standard citation order based on facets, in a categorial logic, but a flexible one, although thorough. For example, it is possible for a time term (subdivision) to precede an action term, when the former is related to the latter as the object of action: "Arazzi - Sec. 16.-17. - Restauro" [Tapestry - 16th-17th century - Restoration] (p. 126). So, even with more complex subjects, it is possible to produce perfectly readable strings covering the whole of the subject matter without splitting it into two incomplete and complementary headings. To this end, some unusual connectives are adopted, giving the strings a more discursive style.

- Volume 1 is divided into three parts. Part One (Chapters 1 and 2) constitutes an introduction to the reference process and automated reference services. Part Two, "Information: Control and Access," consists of Chapters 3 through 6 and covers an introduction to bibliographies, indexing, and abstracting services. Chapters 7 through 12 are in Part Three, "Sources of Information," which include encyclopedias, various ready reference sources, biographical sources, dictionaries, geographical sources, and government documents. It is as pointless for students to memorize details about specific reference sources, as it is necessary for them to grasp the essential areas of agreement and difference among the various forms. To this end, every effort is made to compare rather than to detail. Only basic or foundation reference works are discussed in this volume. But readers may not find all basic titles included or annotated because: (1) There is no consensus an what constitutes "basic". (2) The objective of this text is to discuss various forms, and the titles used for that purpose are those that best illustrate those forms. (3) The annotations for a specific title are duplicated over and over again in Guide to Reference Books and Guide to Reference Materials, which list the numerous subject bibliographies. In both volumes, suggested readings are found in the footnotes and at the end of each chapter. When a publication is cited in a footnote, the reference is rarely duplicated in the "Suggested Reading." For the most part, these readings are limited to publications issued since 1987. In addition to providing readers with current thinking, these more recent citations have the added bonus of making it easier for the student to locate the readings. A number of the suggested reading items will be found in Reference and Information Sources, A Reader, 4th ed., published by Scarecrow Press, in 1991. It is beyond argument, of course, that all readings need not necessarily be current and that many older articles and books are as valuable today as they were when first published. Thanks to many teachers' having retained earlier editions of this text and the aforementioned Scarecrow title, it is possible to have a bibliography of previous readings. As has been done in all previous editions, the sixth edition notes prices for most of the major basic titles. This practice seems particularly useful today, since librarians must more and more be aware of budgetary constraints when selecting reference titles. CD-ROMS are listed where available. Prices are based an information either from the publisher of the original reference source or from the publisher of the CD-ROM disc. If a particular work is available online, the gross hourly rate as charged by DIALOG is given for its use. Both this rate and the book prices are current as of late 1990 and are useful in determining relative costs. Bibliographic data are based an publisher's catalogs, Books in print, and examination of the titles. The information is applicable as of late 1990 and, like prices, is subject to change.

- Wer wissen will, wie alt ein Wort ist, woher es stammt, welche Bedeutung es ursprünglich hatte und mit welchen anderen Wörtern es zusammenhängt, findet in diesem Nachschlagewerk präzise Angaben über "tó étymon", den "wahren Sinn eines Wortes". In über 8 000 Einträgen gibt das 'Etymologische Wörterbuch des Deutschen' Auskunft über den Grundwortschatz der deutschen Sprache: Herkunft, Entwicklung, Bedeutung und Verwandtschaft von rund 22 000 Wörtern werden erschlossen. Verzeichnet sind das erste Auftreten eines Wortes im Deutschen, verwandte Formen innerhalb des Germanischen, indoeuropäische Wurzeln, kurz die Ursprungsform. Oberregionale Ausdrücke der Umgangssprache fehlen ebensowenig wie fachsprachliche Begriffe oder geläufige Fremdwörter, die in ihre Ursprungssprache zurückverfolgt werden. Bedeutungshinweise verdeutlichen die semantischen Bezüge zwischen Sprach- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte. Ableitungen und Zusammensetzungen eines Stichworts sind mit Angabe ihres Erstbelegs aufgeführt. Innersprachliche Zusammenhänge und lauthistorische Gesetzmäßigkeiten eröffnen sich dadurch dem an Sprache interessierten Leser.
