    Abstract
Although hundreds of undergraduate students receive library instruction when their instructors arrange for a class tour or bibliographic instruction session, thousands of other students do not. Describes the planning process that took place in the development of a cross platform interactive multimedia instruction program designed to be accessible to students with diverse information literacy skills. Covers the merits and limitations of several authoring software packages and offers some guidelines concerning time requirements

    Abstract
Proposes an uniform indexing scheme for enhancing object-oriented databases performance. It is based on a single B-tree and combines both the hierarchical and nested indexing schemes. the uniformity of this scheme enables compact and optimised code for dealing with a large range of queries on the one hand, and flexibility in adding and removing indexed paths on the other hand. Discusses the performance and presents an extensive experimental analysis for the class-hierarchy case. The results show the advantages of the scheme for small range, clustered sets queries

    Abstract
Presents a survey and discussion on signature-based text retrieval methods. It describes the main idea behind the signature approach and its advantages over other text retrieval methods, it provides a classification of the signature methods that have appeared in the literature, it describes the main representatives of each class, together with the relative advantages and drawbacks, and it gives a list of applications as well as commercial or university prototypes that use the signature approach

    Abstract
Book dedications by authors, often in verse form and appearing just before the title page, are one of the 6 elements describes by the French scholar Genette as paratextual. For some reasons dedications have failed to interest librarians, yet books containing them can be a valid object of bibliographic study, for the reasons that they carry special markings: are an example of a specific literary or semantic class; and reveal linguistic/stylistic features. Examines the history of literary dedications, citing examples by well-known writers, and suggests that cataloguing software should have a special field to record dedication

    Abstract
Describes an object-oriented model for paper-based multimedia documents such as textbook with embedded graphics. This model is the 1st step towards building a manageable authoring system for the Web, in which documents can be easily built, extended, truncated, reordered, assembled and disassembled on a computer basis, and the document components, can be reused. The model will also make accessible properties, which might be significant or important to the user, especially in searching or classifying documents, such as the document title and author. Explains the model design and presents the class hierarchy for the model

    Abstract
Studies relevance relations in the context of propositional logical theories and subject matters or topics of interest, which are taken to be sets of atomic propositions. Introduces the class of regular belief models and a notion of prime implicates applicable to all forms of this type of belief. Introduces implicit belief, which has a classical possible world model. discusses definitions of relevance for regular belief using implicit belief as a running example. Focuses on connections between relevance under implicit belief and work in the literature and computational aspects. Discusses relevance under explicit belief, which is based on a 3 valued extension of possible world semantics

    Abstract
Attention is drawn to the inadequacies of the existing classification schemes as pointed out by individuals and groups concerned with classification research. The article is based on an earlier study by the author, which identified and arranged in a filiatory way the main concepts of sociology and determined their relative significance as headings in a classification scheme. The sociology schedule in the DDC was examined on the basis of 9 evaluation criteria, as e.g. arrangement of major categories, provision for main concepts, use of phrased headings instead of individual key terms, and scattering of related concepts in the schedule. It was found that a large number of the main concepts of sociology are either not represented in the schedule or mentioned in the scope note only along with the main headings. A table shows 100 main concepts of sociology arranged and classified within 10 major categories or sections, and their provision in the DDC. The study suggests that the DDC needs serious reconsideration with regard to the main headings/categories provided as class headings, terminology used for the concepts, the filiatory structure adopted, and the representation of the main concepts of sociology

    Abstract
The ways in which notation can be used to express the content of documents to which it relates are various. At the most superficial level notation can correspond to the hierarchical structure of the schedules or link to literal components. The notation of compound concepts can express the structure and composition of the compound, and systems exist in which symbols denote the functional roles of the constituent elements and the relationships between them. At the highest level notation can be used to mirror the actual structure of those entities which it represents, as in the case of mathematical systems or chemical compounds. Methods of displaying these structures are examined, and the practicality in a documentary context is questioned, with particular reference to recent revision work on the chemistry class of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition (BC2)
