    Abstract
    Presents EuroMenUSE, a PC-based front-end system developed to improve access to EPOQUE, the major document database of the European Parliament. EuroMenUSEe is an exemplar and the first commercial product to result from the application of the Multilingual MenUSE software shell; in this system it uses the EUROVOC thesaurus. This Common Query interface replaces the Common command Language and provides a more effectve way for end-users to access document databases

    Abstract
    Reports a study to compare the ranking produced by several well known probabilistic formulae. Values for the variables used in these formulae (collection frequency for a query term, number of relevant documents retrieved, and number of relevant documents retrieved, and number of relevant documents indexed by the query term) were derived using a random number generator, the number of documents in the collection was fixed at 500.000. This produced ranked bands for each formula using document term characteristics rather than actual documents. These rankings were compared with one another using the Spearman Rho ranked correlation co-efficient to determine how closely the algorithms rank documents. There is little difference in the rankings produced by the Expected Mutual Information measure EMIM and the simpler F4.5 weighting scheme

    Abstract
    Reports preliminary work on the use of evolutionary computing techniques to improve Boolean information retrieval system performance through relevance feedback, such as neural networks and genetic algorithms. One specific form of genetic algorithm technique was used: that of genetic programming. Terms from relevant documents are used to create randomly Boolean queries. Boolean queires are thought of as genetic programming organisms and, as such, are used for breeding to produce new organisms. Organisms which perform well, in terms of how good they are at retrieval, are given a better chance of being selected for breeding, with the result being that the overall fitness of the organisms improve to some extent. The aim is to develop the best Boolean query for an information need, given a small corpus of test documents, and then to use that query on the full collection to retrieve yet more relevant documents

    Abstract
    This paper describes the coming together of two independent programmes developing interfaces which improves access to databases. MenUSE - Menu-based User Search Engine - has been developed to search bibliographic databases whilst HIBROWSE - High Resolution Interface for Database Specific BROWsing and SEarching - is a front-end for searching information stored on structured relational database management systems. Combining the 2 approaches affords the user much greater access capabilities than is possible using traditional retrieval systems.     Abstract
    The University of Huddersfield, UK, is researching ways of incorporating ranking and relevance feedback techniques into a thesaurus based searching system. The INSPEC database on STN International was searched using the VUSE (View-based Search Engine) interface. Thesaurus terms from documents judged to be relevant by users were used to query INSPEC and create a ranking of documents based on probabilistic methods. An evaluation was carried out to establish whether or not it would be better for the user to continue searching with the thesaurus based front end or to use relevance feedback, looking at the ranked list of documents it would produce. Also looks at the amount of effort the user had to expend to get relevant documents in terms of the number of non relevant documents seen between relevant documents
