    Abstract
The Hyperlib project, which is a joint, EC-funded project, between the libraries of Antwerp and Loughborough universities, aims to investigate the opportunities for a hypertext-structured catalogue at Antwerp University. Essential to the project was a survey of user requirements. Because of time constraints, however, it proved impossible to develop a full hypertext-structured database. As a result of the project a redesigned OPAC will be implemented in Spring 95, which will include individual journal article sand the opportunity to create personalised menu-structures

    Abstract
Because of the individual character of museums the use of online catalogues to describe objects in the collections in the Netherlands has lagged behind that of libraries. In 1993 the MIRO (Museale Informatieverzorgingen Registratie Opleidingen) project was inaugurated to identify probllem areas and devise solutions. The project identified 4 areas for which training is required for museum staff: description of objects, compilation of indexes, automation in museums, and the use of multimedia systems. Following the project's report the Dutch government has dedicated extra funds for museum automation

    Abstract
In 1992 the universities of Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht and Tilburg in the Netherlands participated in a study sponsored by the SURF Foundation to examine the feasibility of document digitisation and transmission. The study revealed a lack of use of the technology and highlighted the problems of copyright. As a result of the preliminary study the SURFdoc project was initiated in March 1993 to promote cooperation and examine readers' reactions to such systems. The project has revealed the need for a reorganisation of interlibrary lending

    Abstract
A preliminary survey of poster collections in libraries, museums, and archives in the Netherlands revealed a wealth of material about which little was known. A deteiled survey was, therefore, undertaken in 1992 by the Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst of 14 institutiions known to hold poster collections. As a result of the project the Database Nederlandse Affiches has been compiled to record details of the 72.000 items identified. Other institutions have now begun to submit details of their holdings to the database

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the Basic classification was developed as a joint initiative between the Royal and University Libraries Working Group and the Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation. The classification contains 48 main subject groupings and is intended to facilitate cooperative acquisition and indexing schemes. The scheme can also be used to monitor collection use and interlibrary loan requests. Librarians are urged to adopt the scheme in order to facilitate cooperative projects

    Abstract
A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue. Reactions from 2 cataloguers point to the difficulties in maintaining catalogues in the face of reduced funding and to the important role played by the Pica project in improving library services and reducing cataloguing backlogs

    Abstract
At a conference in the Netherlands in Dec 1995 cataloguing, which has traditionally been regarded as the heart of librarianship, was criticised for being slow and costly. However, the Durch Gemeenschappelijk Geautometiseerd Catalogiseersystem (Shared Online Catalogue Network) enables libraries to contribute and receive good quality catalogue records at substantial savings in cost and time. PICA (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation), which is responsible for the GGC, is currently examining ways to speed up the process. Other sources for records include library suppliers and external agencies

    Abstract
In the Netherlands, for historical reasons, there have been wide variations in subject indexing practice from library to library. With the creation of the Pica (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation) catalogue network a start was made to create a subject classification suitable for all types of libraries. In 1985 a working party was formed with representatives from the Dutch university libraries and Royal Library. The working party has been responsible for the creation of the general subject classification which has been in use in the Royal Library, and Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen, and Twente university libraries since Oct. 91. The system was designed for use in online public access catalogues but may also be used as a basis for collection assessment

    Abstract
Contribution to thematic issue of art libraries in the Netherlands. Visual images are now widely recognised as an importatnt resource for the historical research. To improve access to collections of such material H. van de Wal developed ICONCLASS in the Netherlands. With some 150.000 controlled indexing terms the scheme is hierarchical and easy to use. In response to requests a version of ICONCLASS has been developed for use in automated systems. The scheme has been used by the Dutch Royal Library for its database of printers' devices, published in CD-ROM version in Dec. 91. Experience with the project shows the need for careful preparations and the use of trained staff

    Abstract
Hitherto, the ISBD for nonbook materials and computer files have provided standards for cataloguing electronic media. However, new technology, particular digitisation with its facility to create multimedia resources, has highlighted the need for new bibliographic standards. In the Netherlands the Royal Library, Pica and SURFnet, in 1993, implemented a project to create standards for networked information resources. The results will provide useful guidelines unitl the publication of an ISBD for electronic resources

    Abstract
In the Netherlands and Belgium some 50 documentation centres on women's affairs have been created in recent years, ranging from small voluntary centres through university departmental collections to regional and national centres. Increased interest in women's affairs resulted in a joint project by the International Informatiecentrum an Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging and the Anna Maria van Schuurman Centre to create a thesaurus of indexing terminlogy. Work began in 1988 and the final version was published in 1992. The thesaurus contains some 2.200 terms and 700 references and includes a permuterm index of headings. The IIAV in Amsterdam has accepted responsibility for maintaining the thesaurus
