- Within the SOKRATES project Bavarian state, university and regional libraries are being equipped with locally automated systems. Regensburg university library has piloted the SISIS-OPAC-ONL version 1.0, adapted from the SINIX-based software SISIS-SE, with a machine readable stock of 1,66 million titles. - Abstract
- Describes the availability, use and value of Z39.50, an international standard which allows a librarian accessing a database on one computer platform to search an OPAC hosted on another computer with a totally different database structure. Experiences of those working with the standard are given, and its use by the European Union IRIS project to link 6 major Irish research libraries is examined. Despite some problems encountered with different forms of author cataloguing and possible competition from the WWW, the standard is seen as possessing considerable strengths, for example in searching different catalogues and presenting the results in a standard format on screen, which justify the continuing interest of librarians

- Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic has been providing audio recordings of educational texts since 1948. In 1992, it initiated a project to develop an OPAC to allow institutional providers and individual borrowers to search its holdings of over 80.000 volumes. In 1993, a coordinated pilot project was begun to allow a limited test group of institutional sites and individuals the ability to use the catalogue ordering mechanism for document delivery. Describes the project concluding that, although the project was not considered a success, much insight was gained as a result of the efforts which will be of value in the development of an improved version of the OPAC

- Abstract
- Popular commercial on-line services such as Google, e-Bay, Amazon, and Netflix have evolved quickly over the last decade to help people find what they want, developing information retrieval strategies such as usefully ranked results, spelling correction, and recommender systems. Online library catalogs (OPACs), in contrast, have changed little and are notoriously difficult for patrons to use (University of California Libraries, 2005). Over the past year (June 2005 to the present), the Melvyl Recommender Project (California Digital Library, 2005) has been exploring methods and feasibility of closing the gap between features that library patrons want and have come to expect from information retrieval systems and what libraries are currently equipped to deliver. The project team conducted exploratory work in five topic areas: relevance ranking, auto-correction, use of a text-based discovery system, user interface strategies, and recommending. This article focuses specifically on the recommending portion of the project and potential extensions to that work.

- The PACLink Project grew out of discussions between a joint association of libraries and computing centres among the 4 State University of New York (SUNY) and SUNY central administration to develop a cooperative OPAC based on NOTIS.
