    Abstract
    Considers South Africa's national bibliographic activities in the light of the need for more equitable access to information resources. Outlines several factors which are important for improving access to information for previously marginalized communities, and for general development purposes. The issues include: funds available for existing and prospective services; the heterogeneous clientele for future services; the phenomenon of composite CD-ROMs; the question of ownership of bibliographic tools; standardization problems; cooperative bibliographic activities; the information value of grey literature; and recognizing the broader base of stakeholders in national bibliographic services

    Abstract
    This article studies concentration aspects of bibliographies. More, in particular, we study the impact of incompleteness of such a bibliography on its concentration values (i.e., its degree of inequality of production of its sources). Incompleteness is modeled by sampling in the complete bibliography. The model is general enough to comprise truncation of a bibliography as well as a systematic sample on sources or items. In all cases we prove that the sampled bibliography (or incomplete one) has a higher concentration value than the complete one. These models, hence, shed some light on the measurement of production inequality in incomplete bibliographies.

    Abstract
    In this paper, the role of bibliography in the global learning society is examined. Through an analysis of issues characterizing modernity and globalization, an understanding of bibliography located in light of these issues. I argue that by considering bibliography as a document performing a particular communicative activity with a particular purpose and as a genre that both creates particular expectations as to how to use a bibliography and how to recognize a given bibliographical activity, bibliography as a form of knowledge organization may be able to deal with the effects of modernity on social and cultural communication. I conclude that these ways of understanding bibliographical activity may provide means as to how understand and situate the role of bibliography in the global learning society.

    Abstract
    Von einem Studenten bin ich darauf angesprochen worden: Es gebe eine Art Suchmaschine, über die man sich zu jedem beliebigen Thema umfassende Literaturlisten zusammenstellen lassen könne, die Bücher wie Zeitschriftenaufsätze nachwiesen. Allerdings war ihm die WWW-Adresse entfallen und er hoffte, sie von mir, dem Auskunftsbibliothekar, genannt zu bekommen. Aber ich konnte ihm leider nicht helfen. Zu seinem Erstaunen hatte ich noch nie von einer solchen Wundermaschine gehört - und nicht nur das: ich äußerte sogar Zweifel an ihrer Existenz. Diesen widersprach der Student. Und er gab an, den Hinweis darauf in dem kostenlos verteilten Hochschulmagazin Unicum gefunden zu haben. Meine Neugier war geweckt. Sollte es diese sagenhafte Maschine geben, musste ich sie selbstverständlich kennen lernen und prüfen, ob und inwieweit sie für meine Informationstätigkeit nutzbar sein könnte. Also suchte ich mir aus den Papierbergen unserer Universitätsflure die Zeitschrift heraus und fand tatsächlich im August-Heft eine kurze Notiz mit der Überschrift "Recherche light!", bei der bedauerlicherweise unklar bleibt, ob es sich um einen redaktionellen Beitrag oder um einen Werbetext handelt. "Schluss mit Uni-Frust" wird versprochen - und tatsächlich: "Sortiert nach verschiedenen Fachbereichen bekommt der wissensdurstige Akademiker zu beliebigen Themen, Schlagwörtern und Autoren umfangreiche und detaillierte Listen mit Literatur und Fachinformationsangeboten individuell zusammengestellt. Diese reichen von Büchern, Zeitschriften und Fachaufsätzen bis hin zu Multimedia-Dokumenten": mit <www.infoball.de> greife man auf über 600 Kataloge der größten Bibliotheken und eine Vielzahl von Spezialdatenbanken zu.
