    Abstract
Discusses the compatibility of CD-ROM databases and local area networks with notes on: troubleshooting, daily maintenance, CD-ROM databses versus traditional printed services, user training, and the burnout and stress which library staff face. In light of tightening budgets and limited space, LANs are challenging traditional book and periodical budgets, and placing new demands on available library resources and space.

    Abstract
The history of user evaluation of reference service is traced and related to other methods of reference evaluation, including librarian self report of success, behavioral guidelines, and ubobtrusive observation. The evidence to be derived from presently available user evaluations is considered in the light of criteria for a reference evaluation instrument. Concludes that reference success cannot be explained by any one group of factors, and that the best evaluation will utilize many methods

    Abstract
Describes the development of reference services in public libraries and the importance of standards. Explains the need for proper marketing and systematic evaluation, both qualitative and quantitative. Analyses an unobtrusive telephone test of 15 libraries in the UK and gives the results of interviews with 455 users of 13 public reference libraries. Satisfactory results were obtained for straightforward questions but an occasional tendency towards flippancy by staff was highlighted. A further disquieting feature which came to light was the number of people who did not approach staff for help.

    Abstract
Reports a review of the literature on information seeking behaviour in fields other than information science. Fields covered were: innovation research, health communication studies; organizational decision making; and information requirements in information systems design. The review was an integrated review on the basis of what may be contributed to information science. Sets out a general model of information seeking behaviour and shows how that model may be reviewed in the light of work in other fields

    Abstract
Many libraries manage Web sites intended to provide their users with online resources suitable for answering reference questions. Most of these sites can be analyzed in terms of their depth, and their organizing and searching features. Composing a typology based on these factors sheds light on the critical design decisions that influence whether users of these sites succees or fail to find information easily, rapidly and accurately. The same analysis highlights some larger design issues, both for Web sites and for information management at large

    Abstract
Contribution to a feature on health care within the library systems. Considers the role libraries should play in providing medical information to library users, with particular reference to the Mountain States of the Pacific Northwest USA, in light of a survey of academic libraries in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming: 3 large states with no medical schools or large medical libraries. Results show that academic libraries in all 3 states surveyed are performing a significant function in providing medical information to users, including the general public. Receiving medical questions has become an established part of a reference librarian's routine in academic libraries of all sizes, and such questions are particularly common in smaller libraries, such as community and two year college libraries

    Abstract
Examines the role of public libraries in providing different kinds of information to small businesses in light of results of a questionnaire survey of small businesses in the London, Ontario, area. Data was analyzed according to: how small businesses get information; what kind of information they need; and the importance of library resources and services. Results confirm the long held suspicion of business librarians in public libraries that their largest user group is the small business owners in the initial phase of business formation. The findings are expected to add ammunition to public libraries in their efforts to market services both to local funding bodies and small business communities

    Abstract
The WWW represents the final step in the evolution of the Internet and is a tool with many practical applications for library training. 2 such WWW applications are discussed in light of projects undertaken in the Helen Topping Architecture and Fine Arts Library at Southern California University. The WWW may be used as a resource in the library as a source of content which must be taught and should be presented to users along with the same information literacy skills which must accompany any resource. The WWW may be used as a publishing tool where the content is created according to the particular instructional need or situation. This usage involves the technology of the WWW rather than its content

    Abstract
The question of quality in the reference service provided by public libraries was taken up in the USA as early as the 1940s. Since then a number of surveys in various countries and using a variety of methods have attempted to throw some light on the problem. Describes a survey called 'Can libraries find the answer?', undertaken in 1994 as part of a larger quality control project initiated by the public library in Tonsberg in the south of Norway. The aim was to ascertain whether or not the quality of the reference service in Norwegian public libraries is satisfactory and to develop methods to reach and maintain the desired standard. Speculates on the reasons for the unexpectedly poor results

    Abstract
Sourcefinder (SOFI) is an expert system consisting of a database of annotated reference sources, uisng the Nota Bene software, which serves as a support for reference services at the reference desk of the Main Library at Ohio State University. SOFI is used by new reference librarians as a trainign aid, by experienced librarians in unfamiliar subject areas and has the potential to be used at times and places where reference librarians are unavailable. More direct access to reference knowledge is provided ny means of a series of question units on a variety of subjects, where instructions, last resort suggestions, and sources are arranged in the form of types of reference questions. Reports results of a study to test the SOFI question units against the libraries' catalogue, OSCAR, in its ability to convert raw reference questions into subjects and to match that subject with the library's resources. Reference questions were selected and the results obtained by students compared with those obtained by experienced reference librarians. The 8 questions involved: cities; foreign languages; dates and chronologies; money and finance; government officials; testa and assessment; associations; and abbreviations. Point to ways in which SOFI might be improved in the light of this study and suggests the possibility of making SOFI available on the WWW
