    Abstract
The Lynn-Peterson Alternative Classification for Catholic Books and Kapsner's Catholic Subject Headings were devised in 1937 and 1942 respectively to meet a perceived need for cataloging and classifying Catholic theological materials. While not universally adopted by Catholic libraries, both schemas enjoyed considerable use until their decline beginning in the 1960s. Although the latest editions of both works are obsolete, 1954 and 1963 respectively, by choice or necessity a small number of libraries still employ either or both systems. This study questions the practical and economic feasibility of the continued use of either system in light of the movement toward universal bibliographic control as presented by OCLC et al. and the ongoing climate of ecumenism. Moreover, while the test data directly addresses two schemas, it indirectly brings into question the validity of any specialized or locally developed system.

    Abstract
Paper presented at a symposium on 'Implementing the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT): Controlled Vocabulary in the Extended MARC Format', held at the 1989 Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America. Examines the structure of subject headings in the light of machine manipulation. Draws attention to the fact that as on-line cataloguing systems become more sophisticated, and the results of search experiments demonstrate the inadequacy of present modes of subject access to bibliographic and image data, the structure of subject headings become more critical, and changes will continue to occur.

    Abstract
Discusses key aspects of hypermedia usability in the light of the difficulties, and similaries, between the design of hypermedia applications and that of more convential user interfaces. Focuses on the role of analogy and of dynamism in hypermedia interface design, with particular emphasis on the advanteges and pitfalls of using metaphor. The concluding section summaries possible future hypermedia usability research.

    Abstract
Reflects on the situation a few years ago in the field of subject access in libraries and evaluates the present situation in the light of recent developments. Discusses factors which characterise the situation in West Germany today. Examines the organisation of cooperative subject access during the course of which various relationships are explored, and the dovetailing of the network and local library operations, and the formation of local and on-line catalogues are discussed. Describes the relationship between formal and subject access; discusses cooperation in the allocation of catchwords, and cooperation in classified subject access; and addresses 2 forms of cooperative subject access

    Abstract
Certain words are extremely closely connected, regarding their meanings; such word pairs can be formed, however, not only with the well-known synonyms and antonyms, but also with words of clearly different meaning (e.g. light-photon). Our studies show that, even in the case of real synonyms, there is a purely semantical - and consequently conceptual - difference between the parts/elements of the word pairs. Within the pairs there is an elementary conceptual accessibility between the parts; according to all indications this is the basis for the remarkable semantical connection. This close connection is the intensional splitting, the quantum of relation. It is assumed that is plays an important role in the semantical deep structure. Synonyms and antonyms are mere random marks of the existence of this relation on the level of the natural language

    Abstract
The origin of indexing can be traced back to antiquity, but its development was very restricted until after the introduction of printing from movable type. By the late fifteenth century the indexing of books was a firmly established practice, although methods differed. This formative stage is brought to light through an analysis of five representative indexes of the time. Despite crudeness of format and of subject analysis, and the lack of syndetic features, these early indexes display ample evidence of the techniques chat were to be improved upon-but not essentially changed-in the future.

    Abstract
Offers a personal look back at the origins and early use of associative search techniques, and also a look forward at more theoretical approaches to the document retrieval problems. The purpose is to contrast the following 2 different ways of improving system performance: appending associative search techniques to more or less standard (conventional) document retrieval systems; and designing document retrieval systems based on more fundamental and appropriate principles namely probabilistic design principles. Very recent work on probabilistic approaches to the document retrieval problem has provided a new (and rare) unification of 2 previously competing models. In light of this, argues that if we had to choose the best way to improve performance of a document retrieval system, it would be wiser to implement, test, and evaluate this new unified model, rather than to continue to use associative techniques which are coupled to conventionally designed retrieval systems

    Abstract
Many health science libraries are now in the planning stages for acquisition of local online catalogs and circulation systems. Whether turn-key or in-house, in most cases such systems will be based on machine-readable records, or archive tapes, produced as a by-product of automated cataloging. Because most libraries originally used these systems as a more efficient means to produce catalog cards, the usefulness of the records is questioned. A review of selected aspects of cataloging via OCLC reveals several areas in which local card production priorities have made the resultant archive tapes more difficult and costly to use as a machine-readable database. Some specific suggestions are given for altering input procedures to improve the usefulness of archive tapes. In conclusion, it is recommended that librarians re-examine local input procedures in light of cost-effective production of archive lapes to produce consistent bibliographic entries for local online catalogs, resource sharing projects and management information systems.

    Abstract
Originally published in 1979 as a title in the Outlines of Modern Librarianship' series this new edition has been expanded and updated in the light of recent developments in this rapidly developing field of librarianship, with particular reference to automation. As a consequence, this edition is substantially more than an outline of the subject. The authors take the reader through a comprehensive exposition of cataloguing - the definitions, arrangement and role of the catalogue: the history of its development; standardization and AACR2; the subject approach via pre-and post-coordinate indexing; analysis; filing rules and methods; the physical forms of the catalogue; the use of the computer in cataloguing; the role of networks; the management of cataloguing; and the relevance of book indexing. There is a detailed index, as well as a list of abbreviations and acronyms and a glossary of terms.
