    Abstract
As part of her doctoral dissertation at Brabant Catholic University in the Netherlands A. Oomens recently held a survey to determine the relative merits of author and subject arrangements for non fiction collections. Although users browsing through the collections were more likely to find material of interest via a subject arrangement, those looking for a particular title were best served by an author arrangement. All users interviewed preferred the arrangement with which they were familiar

    Abstract
In the Netherlands dissatisfaction with the classification schedules and subject indexing headings assigned to records by the National Bibliographic Service has led librarians to re-arrange their collections in broad reader-interest categories. With the introduction of online public catalogues in libraries and their provision of multiple entry terms for each item, the problems of conflictions in shelf location are largely eliminated. The internal layout of each library may place constraints on such radical reorganisation. Howver, the merging of the children's and adults' sections can be useful in offering children a greater depth of knowledge. A further useful arrangement may be the combination of fiction and non-fiction collections in broad subject catalogues

    Abstract
Programs for converting bibligraphic data are not only of interest to libraries but also to researchers compiling bibliographies. However, few programs are currently available. In choosing a suitable program care must be taken to ensure that it is capable of identifying and converting all fields likely to be encountered, to the required format. Optical scanning can provide a convenient solution for converting printed output to machine-readable format. Increasing acceptance of standardised formats will facilitate exchange of data

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the SISO general classification scheme is criticised by staff of small libraries as too user hostile, and by staff in larger libraries, as lacking detailed subject divisions. To answer such criticism the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum has set up a Committee to examine the future of SISO. The Committee has announced plans for the creation of a series of panel discussions to enable staff from all types of library to air their views

    Abstract
In the Netherlands and Belgium some 50 documentation centres on women's affairs have been created in recent years, ranging from small voluntary centres through university departmental collections to regional and national centres. Increased interest in women's affairs resulted in a joint project by the International Informatiecentrum an Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging and the Anna Maria van Schuurman Centre to create a thesaurus of indexing terminlogy. Work began in 1988 and the final version was published in 1992. The thesaurus contains some 2.200 terms and 700 references and includes a permuterm index of headings. The IIAV in Amsterdam has accepted responsibility for maintaining the thesaurus

    Abstract
Retrieval techniques may be based on the full text of documents, or on descriptors selected from a thesaurus. The latter approach constitutes an attempt to bridge the gap between demand and documents, which causes problems if demand cannot be forecast. Building up a thesaurus involves choosing the method of collecting descriptors, choosing the actual descriptors and making the system easily accessible to users. Classification and a classified catalogue are essential to the organisation of knowledge. Rules for the formation of classes have developed out of natural systems of classification. Chain indexing greatly aids the formation of the subject index. UDC and DDC are used in most documentation centres in the Netherlands. Public libraries mostly use SISO, a Dutch universal classification system

    Abstract
The universal classification schemes developed in the 19th century are a direct response to the social changes of that era. However, the increasing use of automation in libraries has highlighted the need fir greater precision in hierarchical structures. A thesaurus of used and related headings can be employed to show the spatial relationship of semantic terms. The resulting search profile can be further enhanced by the addition of citation weighting. To assist users to define searches more accurately libraries using large general classification schemes should consider adding supplementary classification data to records

    Abstract
In the Netherlands the Basic classification was developed as a joint initiative between the Royal and University Libraries Working Group and the Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation. The classification contains 48 main subject groupings and is intended to facilitate cooperative acquisition and indexing schemes. The scheme can also be used to monitor collection use and interlibrary loan requests. Librarians are urged to adopt the scheme in order to facilitate cooperative projects

    Abstract
In the Netherlands, for historical reasons, there have been wide variations in subject indexing practice from library to library. With the creation of the Pica (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation) catalogue network a start was made to create a subject classification suitable for all types of libraries. In 1985 a working party was formed with representatives from the Dutch university libraries and Royal Library. The working party has been responsible for the creation of the general subject classification which has been in use in the Royal Library, and Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen, and Twente university libraries since Oct. 91. The system was designed for use in online public access catalogues but may also be used as a basis for collection assessment
