    Abstract
A review of the current use of reader-interest classification since 1980 as an alternative arrangement of bookstock to traditional classification. Reader-interest classification is known by a variety of names and used in many countries. With a current trend to make libraries more accessible and user-friendly, librarians are experimenting with reader-interest classification. The paper discusses the reasons for using it, principles, catalog aspects, what it brings together and separates, implementation, arrangement and presentation of the bookstock, the kind and size of library where it is in use and the outlook for its continued use. Recent studies and surveys are also considered.

    Abstract
Reviews the consequences of the traditional division of library staff into Technical Services and Reader Services and if decreased interest in cataloguing by library managers. Notes ways in which non cataloguers have had limited involvement in cataloguing. Describes different forms of a holistic approach to library practice and suggests advantages of a holistic work plan. Considers problems of a holistic work plan, advances some solutions and identifies implications for education in cataloguing in library schools

    Abstract
Explores a wide range of options surrounding the choice and application of library and bibliographic classification Systems. It provides detailed descriptions of alternative provisions in the much-used DDC and LCC systems, as well as descriptions and discussions of several alternative systems, such as BC, UDC and Reader Interest

    Abstract
Mentions the areas of application of the postulates and principles of Ranganathan's general theory of knowledge classification. Indicates that classification in the sense of organizing concepts in involved in the generation, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information, especially in designing databases, construction of user interest profile, subject description of documents, arrangement and presentation of information, etc. Demonstrates with example, the application of Ranganathan's postulates and principles of classification in the preparation of an information analysis and consolidation product

    Abstract
Identifies the interest in questions of classified catalogues generated by the development of on-line catalogues, establishing a difference between 2 large areas: free access to information items in a systematic arrangement and expressing the contents of books by means of notational symbols in a classification system in a local catalogue. Examines the elements and structure of classification systems, the internationally important universal classifications, the procedures for book display and systematic processing in West German public libraries and exhibtion techniques in West German academic libraries. Covers universal and faceted classifications, as well as classification systems in on-line catalogues

    Abstract
Precision One MediaSource First Edition is the first film and video listing on CD-ROM containing bibliographic records and information about renatl sources. It was co-produced by the Brodart Co., Pennsylvania, and the Consortium of College and University Media Centres (CCUMC) and requires an IBM/campatible with hard disk, CD-ROM drive and DOS 3.3 or higher. MediaSource is intended for educational and business users and is of particular interest to public, school and academic libraries. Discusses installation, the interface and searching, data quality and documentation

    Abstract
Z39.50 is an information retrieval protocol. It has generated much interest but is so far little deployed in UK systems and services. Gives a functional overview of the protocol itself and the standards background, describes some European initiatives which make use of it, and outlines various issues to do with its future use and acceptance. Z39.50 is a crucial building block of future distributed information systems but it needs to be considered alongside other protocols and services to provide useful applications

    Abstract
The goal of this research is to clarify the role of document classification in information filtering. An important function of classification, in managing computational complexity, is described and illustrated in the context of an existing filtering system. A parameter called classification homogeneity is presented for analyzing unsupervised automated classification by employing human classification as a control. 2 significant components of the automated classification approach, vocabulary discovery and classification scheme generation, are described in detail. Results of classification performance revealed considerable variability in the homogeneity of automatically produced classes. Based on the classification performance, different types of interest profiles were created. Subsequently, these profiles were used to perform filtering sessions. The filtering results showed that with increasing homogeneity, filtering performance improves, and, conversely, with decreasing homogeneity, filtering performance degrades

    Abstract
Collection development theory has generally neglected issues of fairness in the treatment of materials dealing with politics, religion, and other controversial subjects. The communication theory of Jurgen Habermas is proposed as a basis for a rational policy, and for dealing with difficult cases. It is suggested that as ideological conflict becomes less important in the relations between religious groups, it will be more acceptable for libraries to serve the particular religious interest of specific communities, rather than to treat religions as interest groups that, like political parties, should get "equal time" at all libraries. It is further argued that religious fundamentalism and "creation science" are not entitled in the library to "equal time" with science, since our society has made a provisional decision that such questions are most appropriately answered by conventional science. When the status of science is itself the issue, however, its critics from religion and elsewhere are entitled to a respectful and equitable hearing.

    Abstract
The Library of Congress' PREMARC file, conversion of which was completed in 1987, comprises approximately 5 million records from the Library's pre-1968 shelflist. The Libray has mounted a concerted effort to improve the quality of these records by a process of comparison with the Library's Official Catalog. The Library is contemplating conducting a market survey to ascertain whether there is interest in the community in having PREMARC records distributed.

    Abstract
Interest in classification theory and in facet-based systems was more evident during 1992, the year that marked the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ranganathan. Efforts to simplify subject cataloging routines include exploration of automatic and semiautomatic methods. Solutions to online subject searching problems might be shifting to the domains of information-retrieval experts. The 1992 subject analysis literature is examined and described using the following categories: theoretical foundations, cataloging practices, subject analysis in online environments, and specialized materials and topics

    Abstract
4 different items, all of which have direct concern for Africa, have been published between 1991 and 1993 under the auspices of the UDC Consortium, the body now responsible for the maintenance of the UDC. Discusses recent changes in the management structure of UDC. Matters of interest to those concerned with the study of Africa will be found principally in the auxiliary tables, since it is here that most of the detail that is used for specification in the main classes is located. Looks at 2 sections of the classification: tables of language and ethnis subdivisions; and the area table
