Abstract: Case records of patients with brain tumours and the related image files (CATSCAN, MRI, X-ray, etc.) are information products generated and used by surgeons. A system has been developed to navigate within case records and link an to related image files. Hypertext links to relevant Web resources an brain tumours are also provided for from the case records. The collaborative and semantic dimensions of the knowledge base development are mentioned. Some 20 fields record administrative data and some 160 fields describe the characteristics of the tumour, its diagnosis, surgery, post-surgical complications, etc. This knowledge base forms part of a total system that includes three other databases of case sheets of patients (with tumours of the pituitary, spinal cord, and trauma), a bibliographic database, profiles of institutions, experts and projects.

Abstract

Converging digital technologies and networks, especially the Internet offer considerable scope for individuals and organizations to be authors and publishers with the possibility of getting global response to one's ideas. But there are also several impediments to overcome - existence of a multiplicity of languages, cultural bias, misinterpretation of concepts, non-existence and/or non-acceptance of ideas of one group by people of other cultures and faiths. This paper examines the types of indexes, glossary of terms, organization and presentation of text in different languages/scripts, transliteration of selected text, commentaries, help to correct pronunciation, listing of common errors in rendering text, song, etc. by beginners and people of different cultures and language groups, etc. as means and approaches to mitigate the difficulties of communication across cultures, faiths, and linguistic boundaries. Such provision in typical examples of information resources in the spiritual field - an Internet site, and two CD multimedia - is discussed.

Abstract

Interdisciplinary associations laed to the emergence of hybrid disciplines. Interdisciplinary association may be of two types - multi-disciplinary associations and interdisciplinary borrowing. Multi-disciplinary association may be juxtaposition studies or convergence of view points. Interdisciplinary borrowing involves borrowing of techniques and tools, or borrowing of data, or use of principles and theories. The emergence of hybrid discipline pose problems in classification. Some of these problems are highlighted by taking the newly emerging discipline of cycle research as a case study. Cycle research is a general theoretical study of cycle phenomena. It can be deemed to be formed by either of the two modes of formation namely distillation and clustering.
