    Abstract
    In this paper, the role of bibliography in the global learning society is examined. Through an analysis of issues characterizing modernity and globalization, an understanding of bibliography located in light of these issues. I argue that by considering bibliography as a document performing a particular communicative activity with a particular purpose and as a genre that both creates particular expectations as to how to use a bibliography and how to recognize a given bibliographical activity, bibliography as a form of knowledge organization may be able to deal with the effects of modernity on social and cultural communication. I conclude that these ways of understanding bibliographical activity may provide means as to how understand and situate the role of bibliography in the global learning society.

Sein Datenpool umfasst Titel aller Sprachen, aller Inhalte und Veröffentlichungsformen der letzten 500 Jahre und weiter zurück bis in babylonische Zeit. WorldCat ist jedoch nicht nur Verbundkatalog, sondern integriert zunehmend Buchhandelsdaten und Elemente der Biblio-graphie. Das äußerst komfortable First Search-Recherchesystem macht ihn zu einem global einsetzbaren bibliographischen Universalsystem.     Abstract
    Wilson stated that the work of providing bibliographic services is political in nature because catalogers have to adjudicate amongst the demands made for various forms of control by different communities. Although he did not address the work of the Documentalists directly, his claim is an implicit refutation of their universalist claims. Their efforts were to bring all the world's knowledge together, organize it under a single principle, and make it available to an undifferentiated global community. The concept of "universality" is examined in the context of bibliographic services, looking at claims regarding the collection of knowledge, users, and access.
