- Abstract
- Considers the issues of the filing order of bibliographic catalog entries as it relates to information retrieval. Discusses the main problems created by filing order in computerized catalogues and analyses the codes drawn up by the Library of Congress, the British Library and the American Library Association. Describes the efforts made by IFLA and ISO to arrive at greater international Uniformity of filing order rules. The resulting standards ISO 7154-1983 (Bibliographic filing principles) and ISO/TR 8393-1985 (Bibliographic filing rules) are described. Discusses the position of Spanish cataloguing rules in relation to these international standards

- Abstract
- Discusses the history of UDC in Spain from 1895 (when the first International Bibliography Conference aroused interest) to 1989, chiefly in terms of the contributions made by notable individual librarians, in terms of testing out, modifying and adapting UDC for their own collections. Changes of government in 1923 and 1931 and the consequent political upheavals prevented any state action, until 1939 when UDC became mandatory in all state-run libraries, and fully translated version finally became available. In 1989 this obligation was dropped, which may well make inter-library coordination more difficult in the future

- Account of the development of ISBD for cataloguing, focusing chiefly on the IFLA programme initiated at the International Meeting of Cataloguing Experts held in Copenhagen in 1969, which resulted in the 1974 1st official ed. of ISBD(M) for monographs. Versions were developed separately for serials (S), cartographic materials (CM) and non-book materials (NBM), resulting in incompatibilities resolved by the creation of a new general ISBD structure (G) in 1977. Since then new editions of (M), (S), (CM) and (NBM) have been produced, together with versions for printed music (PM) and ancient materials (A). - Account of the experience of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre CIMMYT based in Mexico, which employs some 100 scientists and 600 support staff. To improve services the library updated its system using DB/Textworks, software which can manage large quantities of text including both data and images. The system is structured into modules for cataloguing, circulation, user information, serials, acquisition and suppliers. The chief advantages for medium sized libraries such as CIMMYT is its simplicity; tasks such as defining databases, creating reports, exchanging information so not require the intervention of computer experts

- A review of the literature. Authority control is intended to improve precision and recall but high failure rates detected during online catalogue searches by end users has given rise to debate about whether the time and effort involved in this approach is justified. Suggested solutions include using a combination of indexing techniques, increasing access points, greater standardisation of formats and more powerful software. Cooperative programmes at national and international levels can reduce costs. In Latin America some libraries use US / European formats, while others have developed their own local or regional systems; the whole situation needs to be reviewed to resolve the anomalies

- Abstract
- An examination of the chief developments over the last decade, covering the revisions of the standards for monographs (M), serials (S), cartographic materials (CM); and non-book materials (NBM) published in 1987; and revisions of antiquarian (A) and printed music (PM) standards published in 1991. The process of development of new standards for computer files (CF) and component parts (CP), and the creation of a concise version for mongraphy, is discussed in detail, in the overall perspective of illustrating why ISBD has gained international acceptance. The consultative process of creation and willingness to accomodate diverse cultural, linguistic and bibliographical traditions is the basis, together with universal recognition of the need for standardisation for conversion and use of computerised data. Future developments will focus on standardisation of exchange formats (MARC)

- Abstract
- For higher education, new technology opens up the possibility of online access to international information networks comprising the totality of human knowledge. Developing countries however risk becoming marginalized because they have no culture of cooperation. The Colombian Institute for the Development of Higher Education, ICFES, has been instrumental in developing the National Science and Technology Information Network, linked in 1993 to the National Higher Education System. The next step is to create a common communications infrastructure for all national systems, based on Internet protocols, so that all information units can link into the resources of the virtual library
