    Abstract
Bibliographical problems caused by geographic names in subject vataloging are examnied with a view toward determining procedures for establishing correct headings when changes of name occur and deciding upon the type of provisions to be made in subject catalog maintenance. Examples of typical changes of geographic names in Africa and suggested information cards for the subject catalog are provided

    Abstract
Beginning with Cutter, theorists of subject headings have conceded that certain elements of systematic arrangement in the dictionary catalog are inevitable; yet the fact that no specific guidelines have ever been developed for the determination of the extent to which subject collocation at the expense of specific and direct entry should be allowed has resulted in the many irregularities and inconsistencies now existing in the LCSH

    Abstract
The PRECIS system of subject headings was designed for use with a computer-produced subject index. Accordingly, the routines of subject heading work are clearly differentiated into clerical procedures and those that require judgement. The clerical procedures can be accomplished largely through the use of computer programs. The subject headings represent a unique combination of several different characteristics. As a result the system permits several coextensive forms of a subject name for each work. The allowable forms of subject name are restricted somewhat by the constraints of the system but the final choice amongst the various alternatives is made by the subject analyst. Often, this choice reflects his or her usage rather than any attempt to realize an explicit code for subject names. There is some evidence that this judgement varies in individual cases. Moreover, there is no empirical evidence that the alternatives permitted do reflect user convenience - although, in fact, this may be true

    Abstract
We have investigated the relative merits of searching on titles, subject headings, abstracts, free-language terms, and combinations of these elements. The COMPENDEX data base was used for this study since it combined all of these data elements of interest. In general, the results obtained from the experiments indicate that, as expected, titles alone are not satisfactory for efficient retrieval. The combination of titles and abstracts came the closest to 100% retrieval, with searching of abstracts alone doing almost as well. Indexer input, although necessary for 100% retrieval in almost all cases, was found to be relatively unimportant

    Abstract
Based on a paper presentend to the Documentation Research and Training Centre 'Seminar on classification and indexing in social sciences', Bangalore. An analysis of a detailed survey on facet-analysed subject strings in the field of social sciences. Subject strings of 4 typers were administered as a stratified sample of responses to identify the gaps in semantic connotation of terms. This survey has helped to idetify the possible aberrations in the semantic connotations due to the presence or absence of terms. It was found that use of prepositions, conjunctions and other role indicating terms gives semantic clarity. The syntax of speciator terms may have to be varied according to the respondent groups. It was found that if the number of component terms in a subject string increases beyond a certain limit it gives rise to problems in interpretation of ideas. This indicates a break-even point for formulating subject headings
