    Abstract
Investigates how linkage environments in a hypertext based bibliographic retrieval system affect retrieval performance for novice and experienced searchers, 2 systems, 1 with inter record linkages to authors and descriptors and 1 that also included title and abstract keywords, were tested. No significant differences in retrieval performance and system usage were found for most search tests. The enhanced system did provide better performance where title and abstract keywords provided the most direct access to relevant records. The findings have implications for the design of bilbiographic information retrieval systems using hypertext linkages

    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of the application oh hypertext searching techniques to online catalogues. The technique improves traditional online catalogues: when consulting the catalogue in a non linear way; and when browsing bibliographic information. New research could improve access to larger databases including thesauri and classification schemes

    Abstract
Reports on a continuing project to study children's use of a graphically-based direct manipulation interface for science materials. The Science Library Catalogue (SLC), a component of project SEED, has been implemented in the libraries of 21 elementary schools in Los Angeles and will soon be implemented in a public library. The interface employs a hierarchical structure drawn from the DDC and implemented in HyperCard on the Macintosh. The study on the 2nd version of the interface indicates that children are able to use the Science Library Catalogue unaided, with reasonable success in finding items. Search success on the same topics on a Boolean command driven system was equivalent, but Boolean searches were faster. However, the Boolean system was more sensitive to differences in age, with 12-year-olds having significantly better success rates than 10-year-olds; and to search topic, with one set of questions being much easier to search than the other. On average, children liked the 2 systems about the same; the Boolean system was more attractive to certain age and gender combinations, while the Science Library Catalogue was more consistently liked across groups. results are compared to prior studies on the Science Library Catalogue and other online catalogues

    Abstract
Presents a prototype for a hypertext-based library catalogue using the experience of the Department of Information Science at the University of Graz and the Department of Library and Information Sience at the Eötvös-Lorand University, Budapest. Following an historical overview of the development of the hypertext concept and the benefits resulting from a hypercatalogue, the hypertext structure of the catalogue and its functionality are described. Prospects for the future are also outlined

    Abstract
Outlines the progress of HyperLib, research which began in 1993 to develop a hypertext interface to the online catalogue and other databases at the University of Antwerp. A human factors oriented design methodology was adopted. A user survey was carried out. The project has focused on development of electronic guides and manual and interfaces to access an academic bibliography database and the UDC subject classification scheme. Evaluation is being carried out in 1995

    Abstract
The Hyperlib project, which is a joint, EC-funded project, between the libraries of Antwerp and Loughborough universities, aims to investigate the opportunities for a hypertext-structured catalogue at Antwerp University. Essential to the project was a survey of user requirements. Because of time constraints, however, it proved impossible to develop a full hypertext-structured database. As a result of the project a redesigned OPAC will be implemented in Spring 95, which will include individual journal article sand the opportunity to create personalised menu-structures

    Abstract
Describes a hypertext-based system that integrates the bibliographic information of the library catalogue with user-defined knowledge structures, imports information at the user's command, and offers a dynamic personal information tool for active users. Describes the structure and the content of the data base, and shows how the system can be accommodated to different user groups or individual users.

    Abstract
Hypertext systems can be targeted for many different user populations, yet little experimental research has been done to provide design guidelines on how to match the system to the user. Describes an experiment to test whether age relates to the dimensions of performance, navigation strategies and perceptions in use of a hypertext library card catalogue. While adults were superior to children in speed and accuracy, there were no indications that the children were qualitatively different than the adults in navigation patterns or perceptions of the system. Some children exhibitied more exploratory problem solving behaviours than the adults. A number of design guidelines are offered, based on the empirical results

    Abstract
Multimedia art catalogues present a number of recurring characteristics in both the type of data and the users involved, and in the type of operations required. Typical data include textual catalogue cards manageable through an information retrieval system (IRS), as well as textual captions, images, video and speech, strutured as a hypermedia network. Proposes a model for the design of these applications and discusses its effectiveness in improving the quality of the application. The model exploits a multi-level design approach to organize data and access structures of the IRS while the entity-relationship (E-R) approach, tailored to model hypermedia applications, is adopted to describe the structure of the documents and their links
