    Abstract
The availability of powerful indexing and database products with easy Web connections means that libraries able to gather and edit their own data are emancipated from the large vendors. The Oregon State Library staff used the Data Magician translation utility as part of a complex, but speedy, database converison project. The Oregon Index database of approximately 300.000 records was converted from a BRS database host over to the Inmagic WebPublisher system. Describes the planning and action stepts used in producing the Web accessible index database of considerable size. Participants have high ratings to effectiveness of both the translation utility and the database engine

    Abstract
Reports a review of current and planned developments of the leading suppliers of text retrieval software, aimed at trying to establish trends in the industry. The products evaluated are those from minicomputer and mainframe computer backgrounds and can be best described as fully functional text information management systems, the majority of which operate in inverted file structures which index every word. The survey was conducted by means of interviews with senior executives of the suppliers concerned and the suppliers and systems reviewed were: Information Dimensions (BASISplus); BRS Dataware (BRS/Search); Excalibur Technologies (EFS); Status/IQ (Status/IQ); and Verity (TOPIC)

    Abstract

    Abstract
In this article, the fourth in a series on microcomputer software for information storage and retrieval, test results of six indexing and full-text retrieval programs are presented and various properties and qualities of these programs are discussed. The common faeture of programs in these categories is that they are primarily meant to retrieve words (or combination of them) in large text files. To do this they either simply index existing text files in one or more formats (indexing programs), or they store and index them in their own database format (full-text retrieval programs). The programs reviewed in this issue are the indexing programs Ask-it, Texplore and ZYindex and the full-text retrieval programs KAware, textMaster and WordCruncher. All programs run under MS-DOS. In addition ZYindex has a Windows and a Unix version and TextMaster is also available for for Unix. For each of the six programs almost 100 facts and test results are tabulated. The programs are also discussed individually

    Abstract
For literature searchers who create extensive bibliographies, special software is available. Among the most popular of these packages is ProCite from Research Information Systems. The system uses workforms with predefined fields for author, title etc. Through its BilioLink conversion program ProCite enables data to be downloaded from other files. Advantages of the package are its ease of use and links to WWW applications. However, index browsing is clumsy and there is little control over input errors

    Abstract
Continuing a previous article on CDS/ISIS Micro functions and procedures, illustrates other aspects by recapitulating the strong and weak points of the system. Defects include lack of user firendliness, the search and cataloguing functions, index management, and import/export. Favourable features are total file definition, the formatting language, alphabetical sorting, commands, and data transfer to/from other software environments. ISIS, developed by UNESCO, is a good product, and although demanding for the user, repays the effort made

    Abstract
Reviews ISYS for Windows from Odyssey Development / The Denver Technological Center of Greenwood Village, CO. Explains how it can help users identify documents and create a full text index of the words in each document. This allows the user to create a full text database of the documents, for both personal and Web based use. The database can be created either manually or by using a wizard, which prompts the user with questions that moves them through the creation process. It provides a number of retrieval options, including Boolean searching and proximity options. It is easy to update, using built-in reindexing utilities. Reports no significant complaints

    Abstract
Reports the results of a study, conducted at the National Technical Information Centre and Library (OMIKK), Hungary, to compare 5 popular proprietary CD-ROM searching software packages: OPTIWARE; BRS/Search; ProQuest; SPIRS; and Dialog OnDisc Manager. Software evaluation was based on analysis of a range of CD-ROM bibliographic databases (with the exception of BRS/Search for which the library held no bibliographic databases) and focused on: response times for various activities (logging on, searching, retrieval, display); other performance factors; direct searching features (Boolean operators, proximity operators, arithmetic relations, truncation); index browsing; search strategy handling; display possibilities; output possibilities; and ergonomic and user friendliness factors. No general conclusions are drawn and users are left to draw their own conclusions
