    "Europas kulturelle Vergangenheit bekommt eine digitale Zukunft. Mozart und die Magna Carta, der Mauerfall, Descartes, Dante und Vermeer - das reiche Erbe der Europäer steht seit gestern per Mausklick zur Verfügung. Auf dem Internetportal "Europeana" sind zunächst fast drei Millionen Manuskripte und Bücher, Gemälde, Filme und Fotografien kostenlos abrufbar. Bis 2010 soll die digitale Bibliothek sogar zehn Millionen historische Zeugnisse in allen EU-Sprachen präsentieren. In den ersten Stunden nach seiner Freischaltung brach das Portal allerdings erstmal zusammen, weil mehr als zehn Millionen Internetnutzer darauf zugreifen wollten. Die Zahl der Server wurde inzwischen von drei auf sechs verdoppelt. "Wir hätten uns in unseren kühnsten Träumen nicht vorstellen können, dass es einen solchen Ansturm gibt", sagte EU-Medienkommissarin Viviane Reding in Brüssel. "Europeana bietet die Chance, die reichen Schätze des europäischen Kulturraums und seine starke Vernetzung über alle historischen und politischen Entwicklungen hinweg sichtbar zu machen", meint Elisabeth Niggemann, die Vorsitzende der Trägerstiftung European Digital Library Foundation. Wer nach Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) sucht, findet auf dem Portal zum Beispiel Gemälde des österreichischen Komponisten und die Geburtsurkunden seiner Kinder ebenso wie mehr als hundert Tonaufnahmen oder das Drama "Mozart und Salieri" des russischen Schriftstellers Alexander Puschkin. Mehr als 1000 Archive, Museen und Bibliotheken aus ganz Europa steuerten bereits digitalisiertes Material bei. Die 27 Mitgliedstaaten sind allerdings sehr unterschiedlich vertreten. Gut die Hälfte aller eingescannten Werke stammt aus Frankreich. Deutschlands Beitrag macht erst rund ein Prozent der virtuellen Kollektion aus. Länder wie Malta, Dänemark oder Bulgarien liegen deutlich darunter.

    "Die Ambitionen sind groß: Wenn heute im niederländischen Den Haag die Internetseiten von Europeana freigeschaltet werden, wird der virtuelle Raum um ein Portal bereichert, das Zugang zu nicht weniger als zwei Millionen Exponaten verschafft. Die enorme Sammlung bündelt in digitaler Form 2000 Jahre europäischer Kulturgeschichte - unter Verwendung von Texten und Bildern, aber auch von Video- und Audio-Dateien. Wenn der annoncierte Umfang der Realität entspricht, würde das neue zentrale Gedächtnis der europäischen Kulturgeschichte schon zum Start über etwa zweieinhalb Mal so viele Einträge verfügen wie die deutschsprachige Ausgabe der Open-Source-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia. Ob die hohen Ansprüche des von der Europäischen Union initiierten Projektes auch gehalten werden, konnte bis zur Freischaltung nur sporadisch verifiziert werden. Auf der Homepage zeigte ein kurzes Demonstrationsvideo (zu den streng genommen uramerikanischen Klängen von Lee Hazlewoods "These boots are made for walking") lediglich einen hektisch montierten Querschnitt von all dem, was die Wissbegierigen erwartet: Ein virtu- elles Zwischending aus Archiv, Ausstellungshaus, Museum und Bibliothek. Angesiedelt ist Europeana in der Königlichen Niederländischen Bibliothek in Den Haag. Hier wurden in rund zwei Jahren Vorbereitungszeit alle virtuellen Kulturgüter gesammelt und inventarisiert, die aus den Museen, Nationalbibliotheken, Forschungseinrichtungen und anderweitigen Sammlungen der 27 EU-Mitgliedsstaaten' , eingereicht wurden. Leiterin des Projekts, in das bis zum Jahre 2010 rund 120 Millionen Euro investiert werden, ist die Luxemburgerin Viviane Reding, die das Amt der EU-Kommissarin fir Informationsgesellschaft und Medien bekleidet. Reding lokalisiert die primäre Zielsetzung von Europeana darin, einen kostenlosen und möglichst kompletten Zugang zur kulturellen Vielfalt des Kontinents zu gewähren.-

    "Seit Ende 2008 ist Europeana, die multimediale Online-Bibliothek Europas, für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Unter www.europeana.eu haben Internetnutzer aus aller Welt nun Zugriff auf über zwei Millionen Bücher, Landkarten, Aufnahmen, Fotografien, Archivdokumente, Gemälde und Filme aus Nationalbibliotheken und Kulturinstituten der 27 EU-Mitgliedstaaten. Europeana eröffnet neue Wege zur Erkundung des kulturellen Erbes Europas: jeder, der sich für Literatur, Kunst, Wissenschaft, Politik, Geschichte, Architektur, Musik oder Kino interessiert, hat freien Zugang zu Europas größten Sammlungen und Meisterwerken über ein einziges virtuelles Bibliotheksportal, das in allen EU-Sprachen verfügbar ist. Aber das ist erst der Anfang: 2010 wird Europeana den Zugang zu Millionen Objekten eröffnen, die Europas reiche kulturelle Vielfalt widerspiegeln, und interaktive Bereiche, beispielsweise Gemeinschaften für besondere Interessen, bieten. Zwischen 2009 und 2011 werden rund zwei Millionen Euro jährlich dafür bereitgestellt. Die Kommission will ferner den privaten Sektor in den weiteren Ausbau der digitalen Bibliothek Europas einbeziehen. Im September 2007 befürwortete das Europäische Parlament in einer mit überwältigender Mehrheit angenommenen Entschließung die Einrichtung einer digitalen europäischen Bibliothek. José Manuel Barroso, Präsident der Europäischen Kommission, erklärte: »Mit Europeana kombinieren wir Europas Wettbewerbsvorsprung in den Kommunikations- und Netztechnologien mit unserem reichen kulturellen Erbe. Die Europäer haben nun schnell und einfach über ein einziges Portal Zugang zu den riesigen Beständen unserer großartigen Sammlungen. Europeana ist mehr als eine Bibliothek: sie inspiriert die Europäer des 21. Jahrhunderts dazu, der Kreativität ihrer innovativen Vorfahren nachzueifern, wie es die treibenden Kräfte der Renaissance taten. Allein die Möglichkeiten, die Europeana Studenten, Kunstliebhabern oder Schülern bietet, sind faszinierend: sie haben online Zugang zu den Kulturschätzen aller Mitgliedstaaten, können sie kombinieren und gezielt suchen. Europeana ist ein deutlicher Beleg dafür, dass die Kultur im Zentrum der europäischen Integration steht.«
