    In a large-scale classification system, such as UDC, users are often troubled during the process of finding a relevant classification number for his concept or term and producing (combining) a final compound classification number. UDC tables are now computerized in many language editions, and the MRF had released as a master file (database) by the UDCC in 1993. In this paper, a system function is described for a man-machine interactive system to support compound UDC number assignment, and the necessary re-organization of UDC data/file formats are considered for the use in the automatic classification number combination

    Classification numbers and shelf marks may be useful in online searching. Ways of using classification in online searching include: direct classification searching; use of classification as linking devices or pivots; and direct or indirect searching of classification schedules and indexes.     The paper reviews the development of the USMARC Format for Classification Data, a standard for communication of classification data in machine-readable form. It considers the uses for online classification schedules, both for technical services and reference functions and gives an overview of the format specification details of data elements used and of the structure of the records.     Abstract
    For generations, libraries have facilitated access to information sources by the development and use of a wide range of appropriate organizational processes. Within a Web-based demonstration prototype, we have applied several established library procedures, principles and practices to enhance access to selected Internet resources in science and technology. In seeking to manage these sources, we have established defined collection, adopted an established library classification scheme as an organizational framework, and sought to stimulate the features and functions of a physical library collection and conventional reference sourcees.     SELVI (Knowledge Classification of Digital Information Materials with Special Reference to Clustering Technique) finds that it is essential to classify digital material since the amount of material that is becoming available is growing. Selvi suggests using automated classification to "group together those digital information materials or documents that are "most similar" (p. 65). This can be attained by using Cluster analysis methods. PRADHAN and THULASI (A Study of the Use of Classification and Indexing Systems by Web Resource Directories) compare and contrast the classificatory structures of Google, Yahoo, and Looksmart's directories and compare the directories to Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification and Colon Classification's classificatory structures. They find differentes between the directories' and the bibliographic classification systems' classificatory structures and principles. These differentes stem from the fact that bibliographic classification systems are used to "classify academic resources for the research community" (p. 83) and directories "aim to categorize a wider breath of information groups, entertainment, recreation, govt. information, commercial information" (p. 83). NEELAMEGHAN (Hierarchy, Hierarchical Relation and Hierarchical Arrangement) reviews the concept of hierarchy and the formation of hierarchical structures across a variety of domains. NEELAMEGHAN and PRADAD (Digitized Schemes for Subject Classification and Thesauri: Complementary Roles) demonstrate how thesaural relationships (NT, BT, and RT) can be applied to a classification scheme, the Colon Classification in this Gase. NEELAMEGHAN and ASUNDI (Metadata Framework for Describing Embodied Knowledge and Subject Content) propose to use the Generalized Facet Structure framework which is based an Ranganathan's General Theory of Knowledge Classification as a framework for describing the content of documents in a metadata element set for the representation of web documents. CHUDAMANI (Classified Catalogue as a Tool for Subject Based Information Retrieval in both Traditional and Electronic Library Environment) explains why the classified catalogue is superior to the alphabetic cata logue and argues that the same is true in the digital environment.

    Abstract
    Online displays of bibliographic records in call number order can serve various functions. A literature search showed no papers or books discussing this topic directly. Various displays from online catalogues available via the Internet were examined, as were displays sent to the author by colleagues. A number of the displays were uninformative to the extent that the identification of works associated with call numbers was difficult or impossible without follow-up searching of the individual bibliographic records. Other displays provided information where further searching of the database would not be required for most purposes. Displays noted ranged from displays with call numbers alone, with no bibliographic information, to records including main entry, title, statement of responsibility, place, publisher, and date. Suggestions of useful data elements to be included in displays of bibliographic records in call number order are made for the following functions: shelflisting, cataloguing, catalogue maintenance, reference, public searches, acquisition and collection development, and inventory control. Recommendations are made that the following data elements should be present in call number displays: entire call number as a sequencing element; main entry; entire title proper, and the date. Concern is expressed that the call number filing arrangement be that followed in traditional shelflists, and a suggestion is made that possible consensus on the placement of the data elements within a display be considered in the future

    Abstract
    Broughton is one of the key people working on the second edition of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification (BC2). Her article has a brief, informative history of facets, then discusses semantic vs. syntactic relationships, standard facets used by Ranganathan and the Classification Research Group, facet analysis and citation order, and how to build subject indexes out of faceted classifications, all with occasional reference to digital environments and hypertext, but never with any specifics. It concludes by saying of faceted classification that the "capacity which it has to create highly sophisticated structures for the accommodation of complex objects suggests that it is worth investigation as an organizational tool for digital materials, and that the results of such investigation would be knowledge structures of unparalleled utility and elegance." How to build them is left to the reader, but this article provides an excellent starting point. It includes an example that shows how general concepts can be applied to a small set of documents and subjects, and how terms can be adapted to suit the material and users

    Abstract
    A new design for the DDC allows for display of the schedules and indexes in a hypertextual browser which was originally designed for the more conventional thesaurus with BT-NT, RT and USE-UF relations. Features of the DDC which approxumate those relations and the presentation of the rich vocabulary found in the hierarchical structure, captions, index entries and notes are represented for the library user's perusal and choice before searching a library's holdings. By dragging and dropping parts from such a display into a search window, the search for bibliographic items can begin and revised painlessly. Information such as class numbers of subject headings for retrieved items can be dragged and dropped into the searchw indow of the Visual Dewey display window as it suits the user to review vocabulary or revise the search results. This seamless to-ing and fro-ing allows for a truly interactive and spontaneous search environment, with maximum assistance at point of need. 'File folders' exist for saving any Visual Dewey information, any retrieved items, etc.
