    Abstract
This entry outlines the history, application, and nature of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). It explains its structure, management, revision, and the many changes that have taken place since the Task Force for UDC Development reported in 1990, and the UDC Consortium was formed. This led to the creation of the machine-readable database, or Master Reference File (MRF), consisting of some 66,000 terms, which forms the basis of all published editions and is revised and updated annually. Revision procedures and applications in an online environment are noted and the potential for future development discussed.

    Abstract
Literaturdatenbanken, Informationsseiten von Forschungseinrichtungen u.a.

    Abstract
This book is an extension and total revision of the author's earlier Guide to the use of UDC. The original was written in 1993 and in the intervening years much has happened with the classification. In particular, a much more rigorous approach has been undertaken in revision to ensure that the scheme is able to handle the requirements of a networked world. The book outlines the history and development of the Universal Decimal Classification, provides practical hints on its application and works through all the auxiliary and main tables highlighting aspects that need to be noted in applying the scheme. It also provides guidance on the use of the Master Reference File and discusses the ways in which the classification is used in the 21st century and its suitability as an aid to subject description in tagging metadata and consequently for application on the Internet. It is intended as a source for information about the scheme, for practical usage by classifiers in their daily work and as a guide to the student learning how to apply the classification. It is amply provided with examples to illustrate the many ways in which the scheme can be applied and will be a useful source for a wide range of information workers

"The 14th National Conference of the Association of Librarians in Education - Romania (Asociatia Bibliotecarilor din Invatamant - Romania - ABIR) was held at the Central University Library "Lucian Blaga" in Cluj. On this occasion the Cataloguing and Indexing Section of ABIR had a very active workshop under the general theme of the conference, the changes in the librarian's profession. On the first day of the conference a new indexing tool was released: "Tezaurul interdisciplinar multi lingv pentru uzul bibliotecilor - româna, engleza, franceza" (Multilingual interdisciplinary thesaurus for library use - Romanfan, English, French) by Victoria Frâncu. The range of subjects discussed was not limited to the theme but also included other topics including: the Romanfan translation of IFLA s document Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records for which the permission was obtained in the meantime; the Romanian translation of Ia McIlwaine's "The Universal Decimal Classification: a Guide to its Use" as a result of the favourable answer to the survey organised by our section of the library association; the includinn of Romanfan as a language of the future multilingual UDC Master Reference File; and future activities. The speakers, all specialists in cataloguing and indexing from the main university libraries of Romania, presented papers including subjects such as the following: the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), the use of RAMEAU authorities in a Romanfan library environment, cataloguing of electronic resources, a well-documented user study an different user and document categories, the many facets of subject analysis as prior activity in subject representation, the necessity of exchange formats in information transfer."

    Abstract
UDC aims to be a consistent and complete classification system, that enables practitioners to classify documents swiftly and smoothly. The eventual goal of UDC is to enable the public at large to retrieve documents from large collections of documents that are classified with UDC. The large size of the UDC Master Reference File, MRF with over 66.000 records, makes it difficult to obtain an overview and to understand its structure. Moreover, finding the right classification in MRF turns out to be difficult in practice. Last but not least, retrieval of documents requires insight and understanding of the coding system. Visualization is an effective means to support the development of UDC as well as its use by practitioners. Moreover, visualization offers possibilities to use the classification without use of the coding system as such. MagnaView has developed an application which demonstrates the use of interactive visualization to face these challenges. In our presentation, we discuss these challenges, and we give a demonstration of the way the application helps face these. Examples of visualizations can be found below.

    Abstract

    Abstract
This paper focuses on the practical limitations in the content and software of the databases that are used to calculate the h-index for assessing the publishing productivity and impact of researchers. To celebrate F. W. Lancaster's biological age of seventy-five, and "scientific age" of forty-five, this paper discusses the related features of Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS), and demonstrates in the latter how a much more realistic and fair h-index can be computed for F. W. Lancaster than the one produced automatically. Browsing and searching the cited reference index of the 1945-2007 edition of WoS, which in my estimate has over a hundred million "orphan references" that have no counterpart master records to be attached to, and "stray references" that cite papers which do have master records but cannot be identified by the matching algorithm because of errors of omission and commission in the references of the citing works, can bring up hundreds of additional cited references given to works of an accomplished author but are ignored in the automatic process of calculating the h-index. The partially manual process doubled the h-index value for F. W. Lancaster from 13 to 26, which is a much more realistic value for an information scientist and professor of his stature.

    Abstract
The project Authority File by Biblioteca Augusta, the State Archives of Perugia, and the Archive Superintendence of Umbria aims at the creation of an experimental aid for reference and bibliographic control addressed to librarians, keepers of archives, and historians interested in the study of the Perugian area in the period prior to the nineteenth century. This paper describes the project to build this authority file.

German ISKO The German ISKO held its 10th conference in Vienna from July 3rd to 5th 2006-just before the International ISKO Conference. Main themes were Compatibility and Heterogeneity, Ethics and Future of Knowledge Organization. The program contained some English lessons and a tutorial on Ontologies. The German proceedings (Fortschritte in der Wissensorganisation 10) will be published in 2007 by Ergon together with some remaining papers of the international conference. The next German conference will be held in November 2007 in Konstanz with a focus on sustainability. Jörn Sieglerschmidt will be the local organizer 2007 as well as the new German ISKO treasurer. - H. Peter OHLY Extensions and Corrections to the UDC, 28 (2006) The next issue of Extensions and Corrections (E&C), to be published by the end of 2006, will bring to the UDC community important revisions and additions to the schedule, notably an extensive revision of parts of the Area Table concerning some countries of east and southeast Asia and Africa, and the expansion of Class 2 for Islam, which provides a very rich structure and vocabulary for one of the main religions of the world, thus enhancing UDC in an important subject area of worldwide application. Through the contribution of VINITI's collaborators, it was also possible to advance revision work in the areas of Mathematics and Physics, also published in this vol ume. The ongoing work on a proposal for the revision of Class 61 Medicine continued to receive the expert attention of Professor Nancy Williamson, and this year a proposal for the digestive system is included in E&C. Finally, An Extended Table of Common Auxiliaries (Except Place), compiled by G. Robinson, is presented as a special Annex. Although this is not part of the UDC Master Reference File, it is intended as an authoritative source of all that is currently valid in Tables 1a to 1d and 1f to 1k, and including details from older editions, at the 'full' level, that have never been cancelled. This comes in the same line as the Extended Place Table (Table le) published last year, together with Extensions and Corrections 27 (2005). Additionally this issue will feature a set of articles of interest to classification experts and users. Topics include: an exploration in mapping the UDC to DDC, interfaces to classification and UDC application in online catalogs and information on a new editorial support system being developed for UDC.
