- Article adapted from a paper presented at a workshop on CD-ROM issues: CD-ROM challenges and opprotunities: issues of concern to librarians; sponsored by the Section of Social Science Libraries, 59th IFLA Council and General Conference, Barcelona, Spain, 22-28 Aug 93. Discusses service, cost and technology implications of investments in CD-ROM databases in research libraries and concludes that CD-ROM databases should be considered an integral part of the libraries' services, next to OPACs, and therefore they should be subject to the same critical evaluation as other services. Preliminary remarks about evaluation of online and CD-ROM services, regarding quality and availability, are followed by a discussion of costs which, although not seeming prohibitive at first, may grow as the library encounters difficult technological problems in its CD-ROM development

- Abstract
- As with print collections, the evaluation and selection of CD-ROMs should be based on established guidelines. Such attributes as computer network compatibility and platform are exclusively applicable to CD-ROM. Presents a knowledge based system to prioritize and select CD-ROMs for a library collection, operating on consistency driven pairwise comparisons. The computer system indicates the most inconsistent judgements and allows librarians to reconsider their position. After consistency analysis is completed, the software computes the weights of all criteria used in the evaluation process. The system includes a subsystem for evaluating CD-ROM titles. Offers a CD-ROM evaluation form. Discusses cost considerations; the use of pairwise comparisons in knowledge based systems with reference to data mining; the CD-ROM selection process; and consistency analysis of experts' judgements

- Abstract
- Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

- Abstract
- Reviews the current market for CD-ROM databases with particular reference to the online versus CD-ROM versus print debate. Concludes that the most likely scenario is a steady convergence of technologies, at least until the end of the century. Review the current and the most likely future developments in the area of CD-ROM database contents, software, hardware, and marketing. Concludes that users will choose databases on the basis of such factors as: ease of use; power of use; storage and delivery capacity; quality; functionaliy; timeliness; overall appeal; and real cost, not just price. Lists the most likely candidates for successful CD-ROM database development; not yet available. Concludes that Windows user faces will steadily replace DOS based systems, but not unless the Windows replacements are truly better and not just different. Recommends that both Windows and DOS interfaces be loaded onto the same CD-ROM with each database allowing the user to choose which to use. Reviews likely developments in CD-ROM hardware and marketing strategies

- Abstract
- Traces the development of text searching and retrieval software designed to cope with the increasing demands made by the storage and handling of large amounts of data, recorded on high data storage media, from CD-ROM to multi gigabyte storage media and online information services, with particular reference to the need to cope with graphics as well as conventional ASCII text. Includes details of: Boolean searching, fuzzy searching and matching; relevance ranking; proximity searching and improved strategies for dealing with text searching in very large databases. Concludes that the best searching tools for CD-ROM publishers are those optimized for searching and retrieval on CD-ROM. CD-ROM drives have relatively lower random seek times than hard discs and so the software most appropriate to the medium is that which can effectively arrange the indexes and text on the CD-ROM to avoid continuous random access searching.
