    Abstract
    Describes the raisons d'etre of the catalogue of the Bibliothèque de France which include comprehensiveness, innovation and enrichment, focusing on the intention to enhance its entries with extracts from primary documents as part of a plan to improve its service to users. A sample of 1000 entries have been tested but will only justify evaluation after the official opening of the Bibliothèque de France and observation of subsequent user practices

    Outlines the history of legal desposit laws in France from 1537 to the 1994 decrees dealing with electronic media, and of the national bibliography from its first predecessor in 1811. Describes the structure of the Agence bibliographique nationale and the beenfits of the new site at Tolbiac to the operation of the legal deposit service, particularly the programme of production of bibliographic databases on CD-ROM
