    Abstract
Traces the development of distance education programmes which has been fuelled by the non-traditional student, the growth of the Internet, television and videoconferencing. Key elements of library services for distance education are: reference services, a portfolio of nearby libraries or other resources, document delivery, provision of a broad suite of electronic databases, electronic journals, a database of subject specialists, and use of electronic resources on the WWW

    Abstract
The Internet refers to more than 50.000 backbone regional and local computer networks in more than 50 countries with an estimated user base of over 3 million people. Finding out who has what available on the Internet has become a real problem since the network is expanding so quickly. Describes Archie (the McGill School of Computer Science Archive Server Listing Service), a tool which was developed to help solve this problem. Also describes Gopher, a distributed networking and document delivery system designed to access electronic information and navigate the Internet

    Abstract
The Communications Decency Act provisions of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, USA, has provoked opposition due to its potential impact on the Internet. Journalists have filed a legal challenge and the American Civil Liberties Union and 20 other organizations have obtained a restraining order. Gives examples of the types of communications that would be covered by the act anf gives details of WWW sites with information on the act

    Abstract
The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of the newest tools available to assist in the navigation of the Internet. As with other client/server network tools such as Gopher and WAIS, developments with the Web are in a dynamic state of change. Basically, WWW is an effort to organize information on the Internet plus local information into a set of hypertext documents; a person navigates the network by moving from one document to another via a set of hypertext links
