    Abstract
Developments in techology and cost reductions in automated information systems have resulted in an unprecedented growth in demand, especially for Internet and CD-.ROM services. However, the involvement of commercial organisations in Internet presents a danger to the free flow of information. A number of innovations have been introduced to assist users, including WAIS, WWW and gopher systems. In the Netherlands the Royal Library is working closely with publishers to improve the transmission of information via electronic systems

    Abstract
Describes the ways in which the Russian national bibliography is being transformed as democratic reforms proceed in Russia. A new law 'On the legal deposit of documents' has been introduced which sets out the state's policy with regard to organizing deposit copies of documents on which the national bibliography is based. The range of documents subject to registration and recording is broadening and new principles for the selection of publications are being applied as decreed by the Federal law on legal deposit. The information search language has been changed from the politically subjective 'Common classification of literature for book publishing' (EKL) to UDC. These changes are helping to consolidate Russia's place in the world as a reliable producer and user of national bibliographical information, and are making possible the direct compatibility of its databases with those of other countries

    Abstract
Examines the historical relationship between library and information science and communication science with special reference to academic lineage. Communication science developed during the 1930s in a time of prosperity for the mass media, that communication research had a wide impact on library science at the time, and communication theory provided a foundation for the reconsideration of the relationship between library and information science and communication science

    Abstract
Interviews Judith Krug, director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. Self cesonship is difficult to identify and combat. ALA tries to negotiate first in cases brought to its notice, but if necessary will bring actions. Among cases won was that against the Communications Decency Act, which threatened to restrict library access to the Internet. Any new Act must define 'indecency' clearly. Censorship for children's sake should be exercised by parents, not librarians. Welcomes IFLA's Committee on Access to Information and Freedom of Expression. Free access must also mean free of charge

    Abstract
Public libraries offer fiction readers various approaches to retrieve reading matter: shelving systems that facilityte browsing, knowledgable staff bibliographic aids and also user training and reader guidance. Despite these alternatives, readers often experience difficulty in identifying relevant fiction and no single factor can be isolated as the main cause. Classifies shelving systems and bibliographic aids do not take into account the fiction reader's approach. The nature of fiction does not allow for content to be moulded into any formal knowledge structure. The Analysis and Mediation of Publications (AMP) classification scheme, developed in Denmark, is a fiction classification scheme based on the relation between content and needs of fiction readers
