- Abstract
- Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

- Abstract
- In 1977 the International Congress on National Bibliographies (ICNB) was convened in Paris to develop guidelines for a current national bibliography in printed format. At the IFLA New Dehli meetings the ICNB 1977 Recommendations were reviewed. A Second International Congress on National Bibliographies is being planned to establish guidelines to cover publication of the national bibliographies through new technologies, to discuss the feasibility of raising the minimum requirements in all formats for national bibliographies to better reflect what is published in a country, to investigate more effective methods of proper legal deposit and to investigate feasibiblity of drafting similar recommendations for retrospective national bibliographies. Presents the discussion report of the Division of Bibliographic Control meeting

- CDMARC serials is the Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) database on Cd-ROM. The CONSER database is probably the most exhaustice source of serial titles ever assembled and fits onto a single CD. - Examines the response of the UK Library and Information Council (LINC) to the British Library's consultation paper on the future of the BNB. LINC supports the continuation of the national bibliography in printed form, but is concerned about large areas of the national imprint not covered by it, and suggest that expansion of cooperative data supply should be explored. The current system could evolve into a controlled network of contributing agencies if the necessary legal, financial and quality control framework were established

- Abstract
- This article presents examples of metadata collaborations between the Swiss National Library (NL) and research institutions in the field of Swiss historiography. The NL publishes the Bibliography on Swiss History (BSH). In order to meet the demands of its research community, the NL has improved the accessibility and interoperability of the BSH database. Moreover, the BSH takes part in metadata projects such as Metagrid, a web service linking different historical databases. Other metadata collaborations with partners in the historical field such as the Law Sources Foundation (LSF) will position the BSH as an indispensable literature hub for publications on Swiss history.

- Abstract
- The 1991 IFLA programme given by the section on bibliography presented the theme that national bibliography becomes part of national memeory by recording the publications of the nation. Examines whether the widely distributed publications of popular culture are 'forgotten' by national bibliography. Considers the bibliographic control of newspapers, mass market publications and erotica in the US bibliographic control system. For the last 2 categories, searches selected titles in the OCLC database where many publications were found with wide distribution but recorded by few or no libraries. Popular culture materials should be recorded in national bibliographies to provide a more extended and historically accurate national memory

- Abstract
- The Working group on Guidelines for (electronic) national bibliographies has started the work with an analysis of users and use of national bibliographies (NB). In addition to the well known importance of NB for libraries and librarians, other users and their requirements were identified. The results are presented and discussed; both existing and potential users and use were taken into account. The group will continue the work by specifying the functionality to support the various needs of different users.

- The European Community has funded a project to investigate all aspects of the use of CD-ROM as a vehicle for the dissemination of the bibliographic data of the 7 countries participating in the European Community's National Libraries project on CD-ROM. - Abstract
- The British Library (BL) is CD-ROM as a medium for the distribution of bibliographic records. The BL has been looking at the possibilities for putting its data bases on CD-ROM and has collaborated with the Bibliothèque Nationale, France, to produce a pilot disc holding British and French bibliographic records which has been widely distributed. The BL plans to issue the British National Bibliography on CD-ROM this year, and progress is being made on other cooperative ventures between European national libraries.
