    Abstract
Preparing for new cataloging such as metadata beyond MARC and thesauri beyond LCSH, is an exciting and daunting challenge for university libraries. Advancing technologies, as well as a growing demand for quality information with rapid access is fueling the need for technical services departments to restructure their work to accommodate the evolving world of information management. Catalogers who have been following the same procedures and practices for many years may find this change particularly difficult. Team leaders are often faced with breaking through skepticism and resistance to this new work in order to enable necessary progress. We found that discussions and gradual introduction of new directions is important to acceptance by team members. However, just as important is the implementation of an action plan to ensure that progress is ongoing. Reengineering Acquisitions and Cataloging into Current Processes and Information Management Initiatives, along with forming several focus groups to investigate and evaluate cataloging work, is proving successful for embracing new cataloging at Tufts University.

    Abstract
There has been a flurry of constructive discussion and debate about the future of cataloging and the catalog, from FRBR and RDA on cataloging rules (with a focus on content) to next-generation discovery interfaces for the catalog (with a focus on carrier). A topic that is not receiving as much attention in the midst of these discussions is the scope of the library catalog. This article offers an opinion on the scope of the catalog in a research library, and the role of the catalogers in this time of transition. The article will also elicit some practical approaches that catalogers can take to reposition the catalog for improved user-access and resource discovery.

    Abstract
Examines the future of the cataloguer in an increasingly electronic environment arguing that this future will depend on adopting a more holistic approach that broadens the concept from cataloguing to the organization of information. If the goal of libraries is to provide access to information it is the organizational tools created by cataloguers that help meet this goal. Cataloguers must be aware of the potential uses of information and how it may be exploited and administrators must capitalize on cataloguers' expertise when information systems based on their work are developed

    Abstract
Is there a future for the library cataloger? For the past thirty years this debate has increased with the continued growth of online resources and greater access to the World Wide Web. Many are concerned that library administrators believe budgetary resources would be better spent on other matters, leaving library users with an overabundance of electronic information to muddle through on their own. This article focuses on the future of the cataloging profession and its importance to the needs of library patrons.

    Abstract
Discusses how classification systems have developed to perform the work of articulation in electronic libraries as exemplified by projects involving cooperative design of classificatory structures and democratic classification and indexing. Delineates the stages in this evolution and focuses on the mutual design activity of libraries and users which took place in the development of an enriched multimedia catalogue on the WWW at Ballerup public library in Denmark and on research in england into the democratic indexing of images and fiction. Although recent projects are promising it is important to avoid a mechanistic concept of knowledge and maintain a social view

    Abstract
The author presents the results of the December 1998 CONSER "Survey on Providing Access to Serial Titles within Aggregator Databases." Major findings include 71% of respondents desiring to see full-text serial titles incorporated into the online catalog and nearly 75% interested in acquiring record sets. Also included are an analysis of the numerous survey comments received, strategies toward creating the necessary records and integrating them into OPACs, examples of aggregator analytic records, and other background information on the work of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's Task Group on Journals in Aggregator Databases.

    Abstract
Cataloguing has always depended on choices made by non cataloguers and it has been driven by technology. Technological innovations expand the range of materials requiring bibliographic control and also improve the quality of that control. In the near future, economic factors will constrain opportunities to continue improving quality. Technological factors will continue to broaden demands on cataloguers. Inability to continue expanding the revenue streams of supporting institutions will limit cataloguer's efforts while rapid growth of information bearing technology, particularly on networks, will inflate demands for cataloguing. Librarians must develop expanded skills with automation networks and modern software systems if they are to maintain control
