- Abstract
- On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

- Abstract
- Considers the recent trend towards the promotion, by public libraries, of literary fiction with particular reference to a new fiction initiative by the British Library which seeks to redress the imbalance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. From January 1997, the BNB catalogue records for works of fiction will be indexed using the LCSH in conjunction with a range of genre and form headings derived from the American Library Association' Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works on Fiction, Drama etc. (GSAFD). Access provided by the GSAFD approach encompass access by genre and access by subject

- Abstract
- Describes a project designed to integrate art into the children's library at Espergaerde in Denmark. Explains the aims of the project, principally to make the use of the library an artistic experience, and the 3 tasks the project was to fulfil: the redesign of the interior using artwork by local artists; a change from the traditional arrangement of fiction; and provision of workshop facilities for children to exercise their artistic inclinations. Details how these tasks were accopmplished and discusses the results of the project, stressing the renewed appreciation of art and the importance of passing that on to children

- Abstract
- Considers the theoretical questions involved in the indexing of fiction from several viewpoints: general principles of fiction indexing, and the making of book indexes for novels and other fictional works. Describes the work undertaken to develop fiction thesauri with particular reference to work done in Scandinavia, notably in the development of Kaunokki: the Finnish Thesaurus for Fiction, by Helsinki University Library and BTJ Group Ltd. Briefly presents notes on the structure of Kaunokkis with some examples of its practical use and user feedback from several years' experience of its use in Finnish public libraries. Concludes that the widest field for additional studies would be in the building up of special information systems for fiction.

- Abstract
- Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

- Abstract
- EDVIN is a subject term and genre database for fiction and biographies, for use by librarians as well as by library users, based on many years of experience of what library users actually ask for, i.e. novels on a given subject, a novel similar to or as good as the one they have just read, or the title of a book on the basis of only vague recollections. The product is not a thesaurus constructed according to a previously determined model, but a register of subject terms developed according to the a posteriori method and in close cooperation with the public

- Abstract
- A subcommittee of the Subject Analysis Committee of the Cataloging and Classification Section, Resources and Technical Services Division of the ALA produced recommendations published in 'Guidelines on subject access to individual works of fiction, drama etc.' in 1990. Outlines 4 areas of subject analysis to be applied to fiction: form/genre, character, setting, and topic. Describes the implementation of these guidelines in the US environment and suggests some improvements

- This article looks at self service from a different angle: empowering users to select items themselves. From Jan 1997, BNB catalogue records for works of fiction will be indexed using the LCSH in conjunction with a range of genre and from headings derived from the ALA's Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, etc. (GSAFD). GSAFD gives access by genre and access by subject. Outlines the subject searching capabilities on the library online catalogue which will enable remote access

- Abstract
- Following up themes in an article in a previous issue of this journal on the trend amongst public libraries in recent years to run literature promotions to foster greater exploitation of their collections of fiction, focuses on the contribution of the catalogue to the activity of promotion. Suggests there is plenty of evidence to suggest that traditional access provided by the catalogue is failing to meet a need for subject based access to fiction. A new fiction indexing initiative by the British Library seeks to redress the balance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. From Jan 1997 BNB catalogue records for fiction have been indexed using the LCSH in conjunction with a range of genre headings derived from the American Library Association's 'Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama etc. (GSAFD). The guidelines recommend indexing fiction to provide for 4 kinds of access: by form/genre; characters; setting; and topic. Discusses the principles and usefulness of this approach with the help of some difficult to categorise examples

- Abstract
- Reports results of a study which applied a typological procedure, developed by Lazairsfeld from the social sciences, to a set of qualitative data on fiction reading habits for the purpose of forming a practical typology of fiction borrowers. The data was collected from a sample of 300 readers in 2 medium sized UK public libraries over a 2 month period. The procedure, using an inductive research approach, first mapped readers along 6 dimensions of reading habits which emerged from the data frequencies of borrowing, the numbers of authors currently read, the literary/recreational orientation of reading, searching approaches usually applied, sureness (confidence) in book selection and then proceeded to reduce the number of combinations formed by these dimensions, based on their relationships. A typology of 7 types of fiction borrowers was devised: readers of particularism; readers of frequent literary pluralism; readers of infrequent literary pluralism; readers of frequent recreational pluralism; readers of infrequent recreational pluralism; readers of frequent universalism; and readers of infrequent universalism

- Abstract
- Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction

- Abstract
- The Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC) system, extensively used in Japanese libraries, was devised in 1929. It is difficult to use NDC to classify world literature, such as fiction in English by non American, non British writers. This is not necessarily straightforward in other classification schemes but a survey of 40 Japanese university libraries, of which 24 responded, showed remarkable inconsistencies in the treatment of 22 world literature authors. NDC clearly needs updating to deal with this problem
