    Abstract
An introduction to technical solutions for the generation and conversion of digital documents, using affordable scanner devices, document imaging systems and OCR technologies with cheap, networkable high storage capacity media such as CD-ROMs and CD-R signals the arrival of CD-ROM based document imaging systems. Describes the processes involved, including: the document imaging process; use of scanners to make bitmaps; data compression; advantages of indexing the images; OCR techniques; and document display. Lists some of the companies providing products and services applicable to CD-ROM and CD-R based document imaging systems

    Abstract
Rejects the view that the Internet and WWW are likely to render CD-ROM technology obsolete, arguing that CD-ROM and online are complementary, CD-ROMs offer high density, broad bandwidth data storage and access, while online offers narrow bandwidth data access with the capability of up to the minute updating. The fact that many long standing CD-ROM database publishers have an even longer standing in the online environment is contrasted with their slowness to exploit the shared data structures used to produce the databases. Examples cited of CD-ROM and online hybrid systems include: H.W. Wilson's WILSONLINE and WILSONDISC; SilverPlatter's SPIRS and Electronic Reference Library (ERL) technologies; UMI's databases; and Knight Ridder Information's DIALOG and DIALOG OnDisc titles. Predicts a growth in hybrid systems particularly where frequent updates are needed. These hybrids offer publishers the option of reducing the frequency of updating their CD-ROMs yet improving the currency of the services

    Abstract
Points to the ever widening availability of WWW browsers that conform to the standard of hyperlinking data format of HTML and that provide cross platform, installation free, low cost or free navigation and viewing engines, and the opportunities this offers to CD-ROM publishers chronically plagued by platform and installation problems. Illustrates the discussion with practical examples and commercial products
