    Abstract
Highlights the need for standards for the CD-ROM industry to ensure compatibility and to increase the economies of scale. CD-ROM, as a unique publishing medium, has standards mainly at 3 levels: the physical level, concerning the physical and recording characteristics of the medium; the logical level, concerning the nature of files, directories, and volume descriptors; and the application level, concerning retrieval software, graphics, compression, and encryption. Lists some specific CD-ROM standards (Red book, extended red book, Yellow book) with brief descriptions and the way in which they are related and linked to each other and to other optical disc applications; such as audio CD, CD-I and CD-ROM XA. Concludes that CD-ROM technology brings database services within the reach of information centres, especially in developing countries. Positive trends towards standardization in this technology should help to reduce the technical hurdles

    Abstract
Outlines information access throught he right mixture of technologies namely, online and CD-ROM. While mentioning the electronic databases, electronic information path and generations of online services, presents the salient features of CD-ROMs, their cost effectiveness, database services in various subjects and select databases. Discusses the establishment of CD workstations, their networking publishing and future of optical technology

    Abstract
Presents briefly the impact of information technology on information management. Discuses the publication of electronic databases on CD-ROM and the Internet by considering factors such as media of choice, cost factors, basic infrastructure, steps in publishing and their scenario in India, with products. Also, lists the differences between the two technologies. Concludes that India could use these media for publishing its databases not only for its own use but also to earn foreign exchange.
