    Abstract
Given the speed with which CD-ROM databases and software are proliferating, it is necessary to formulate specific criteria for their evaluation for the benefit of end users and to facilitate library collection development efforts. Proposes a framework for the evaluation of retrieval software of CD-ROM databases, discusses criteria for user friendliness and examines trends in the development of retrieval software

    Abstract
Developments in techology and cost reductions in automated information systems have resulted in an unprecedented growth in demand, especially for Internet and CD-.ROM services. However, the involvement of commercial organisations in Internet presents a danger to the free flow of information. A number of innovations have been introduced to assist users, including WAIS, WWW and gopher systems. In the Netherlands the Royal Library is working closely with publishers to improve the transmission of information via electronic systems
