Abstract

Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

Describes the cooperative initiative in Lower Normandy to create a union catalogue of regional collections of heritage materials held by public libraries. Outlines the stages of the project including the feasibility study, partnership aspects, methodology, acquisition of equipment and recruitment of staff. The cooperative computerization of the catalogue and distribution by CD-ROM meets the needs of professionals and users

Abstract

In Apr 92 the French Library Association (ABF) convened a working group to assess current provisions of bibliographic information. This article reports on the outcomes up to Dec 92, referring to general libraries. The 2 main sources for current French materials are BN-OPALE, the national bibliography; and ELECTRE, its commercial rival. Both are available on CD-ROM; and although ELECTRE is more up to date, it is prohibitively expensive. The other contender is the newly introduced (May 92) National Bibliographic Service, which has serious drawbacks in that it is not available on CD-ROM and disregards UNIMARC format

Abstract

The National Library of France (BNBF) general catalogue in now available on CD-ROM, comprising nearly 4 million entries. Created by retrospective converiosn rather than recataloguing, this version retains inconsistencies and duplications from its sources, but some improvements and corrections have been effected, eg supplementary access points. The CD-ROM offers an invaluable reservoir of bibliographic records for other libraries undertaking retrospective cataloguing, and can be searched either by list or keyword, with results on paper or electronic format

Describes the structure of the Agence bibliographique nationale and the beenfits of the new site at Tolbiac to the operation of the legal deposit service, particularly the programme of production of bibliographic databases on CD-ROM
