    Abstract
    The BAER Web Resources Group was charged in October 1999 with defining and describing the parameters of electronic resources that do not clearly belong to the categories being defined by the BAER Digital Group or the BAER Electronic Journals Group. After some difficulty identifying precisely which resources fell under the Group's charge, we finally named the following types of resources for our consideration: web sites, electronic texts, indexes, databases and abstracts, online reference resources, and networked and non-networked CD-ROMs. Electronic resources are a vast and growing collection that touch nearly every department within the Library. It is unrealistic to think one department can effectively administer all aspects of the collection. The Group then began to focus on the concern of bibliographic access to these varied resources, and to define parameters for handling or processing them within the Library. Some key elements became evident as the work progressed. * Selection process of resources to be acquired for the collection * Duplication of effort * Use of CORC * Resource Finder design * Maintenance of Resource Finder * CD-ROMs not networked * Communications * Voyager search limitations. An unexpected collaboration with the Web Development Committee on the Resource Finder helped to steer the Group to more detailed descriptions of bibliographic access. This collaboration included development of data elements for the Resource Finder database, and some discussions on Library staff processing of the resources. The Web Resources Group invited expert testimony to help the Group broaden its view to envision public use of the resources and discuss concerns related to technical services processing. The first testimony came from members of the Resource Finder Committee. Some background information on the Web Development Resource Finder Committee was shared. The second testimony was from librarians who select electronic texts. Three main themes were addressed: accessing CD-ROMs; the issue of including non-networked CD-ROMs in the Resource Finder; and, some special concerns about electronic texts. The third testimony came from librarians who select indexes and abstracts and also provide Reference services. Appendices to this report include minutes of the meetings with the experts (Appendix A), a list of proposed data elements to be used in the Resource Finder (Appendix B), and recommendations made to the Resource Finder Committee (Appendix C). Below are summaries of the key elements.

    Abstract
    Little research has compared youngsters' use of CD-ROM and the Internet for information-seeking purposes. Nevertheless, the area has recently been addressed within a largely qualitative project more generally devoted to young people's information universes. Home access to the Internet was seen to be more limited than that to CD-ROM, although the former was consulted to tackle needs of a greater number of types. The strategies employed to exploit each form of information resource were essentially similar. No attempts were reported to check the credibility of any information retrieved from electronic sources. The Internet was, however, used more frequently beyond the informants' own homes than was CD-ROM. There was also greater employment of the Internet by adults acting an the youngsters' behalf. As Internet use for school purposes rose in accordance with age, that of CD-ROM declined. When youngsters themselves compared the two resources as information-seeking tools, CD-ROM software was criticized for its lack of detailed material and the Internet for the problems in locating what was desired. Project findings have implications in a range of areas, including the marketing of CD-ROM packages, research and development and practices within schools.

    Aus Sicht der Bielefelder ist das der große Vorteil der virtuellen Welt gegenüber konventionellen E-Learning-Angeboten. Weltweit können Nutzer vom Computer aus die 3D-Welt erkunden und ihre virtuellen Abbilder dort bauen, handeln und diskutieren lassen. Was Walber vor allem interessiert: Sie können auch lernen. Wie bei der Auftaktvorlesung der Bielefelder Wissenschaftler auf "University Island", wo die Uni gleich neben der Mannheimer Berufsakademie ihre Residenz eröffnet hat und manche studentischen Avatare im Halbrund noch verrücktere Frisuren oder Hüte trugen als sonst. "Der Nutzen von E-Learning nimmt ab, je weniger soziale Kontakte vorhanden sind", sagt Walber. Während bei Online-Kursen und erst recht beim Lernen mit CD-Rom das klassische E-Learning schnell an Grenzen stoße, schaffe Second Life eine direkte und unkomplizierte Kommunikation. Auf der Plattform werde es für Teilnehmer möglich, direkt miteinander zu sprechen. Den konkreten Nutzen für die Lehre erforschen Walber und seine Kollegen nun empirisch. "Wir wollen wissen, inwieweit die traditionelle Lehre zum Beispiel durch virtuelle Studiengruppen oder Begleitseminare erweitert werden kann."

    - Beeindruckende Autorenliste - Die Autorenliste beeindruckt: Von Aesop, Goethe, Hesse bis hin zu Zola reicht die Palette der Autoren. Das Archiv kann mit 1500 Romanen, 1500 Märchen, 13 000 Gedichten und vielem mehr aufwarten. Der Umfang. des Archivs übersteigt mittlerweile mehr als 50 000 HTMLDateien mit 850 MegaByte an Text- und Bildmaterial. 4.5 Millionen abgerufene Dokumente werden pro Monat gezählt (Texte und Bilder). Praktischerweise bietet das Projekt Gutenberg.DE das gesamte Archiv auf einer CD-ROM an - gegen eine Gebühr von knapp 26 Euro. Auf diese Weise lassen sich die digitalen Bücher auch offline genießen - ohne Internet. EBooks gibt es in vielfältigen Datei-Formaten. Die eBooks des Gutenberg Projekts bestehen beispielsweise aus HTML-Dateien und können deshalb mit jedem Web-Browser gelesen werden. Andere Webseiten stellen ihre eBooks als simple Textdateien oder Word-Dokumente, wie man sie im Office-Bereich verwendet, zur Verfügung. Mit einer eBook-ReaderSoftware lassen sich im eBook Lesezeichen anlegen, Bilder betrachtenund bequem per Tastendruck hin- und herblättern. Manche Software, wie zum Beispiel der Microsoft Reader, kann sogar die Texte vorlesen. So wird aus dem eBook ein Hörbuch. Für Sehbehinderte eröffnet sich damit eine neue literarische Welt. Die Software kann unter www.microsoft.com/reader/default.asp- aus dem Netz herunter geladen werden. Weit verbreitet ist auch der Adobe Acrobat Reader für die populären PDF-Dokumente. Diese Lese-Software ist unter www.mobipocket.com erhältlich. Mit einem behindertengerechten Computer (beispielsweise spezieller Monitor, Braille-Zeile und passende Software) können Sehbehinderte aus dem täglich wachsenden Fundus der eBooks schöpfen. Wer seine Fremdsprachenkenntnisse aufpolieren will, hat mit zwei, drei Mausklicks massenweise fremdsprachige Literatur am Bildschirm. Egal ob Hamlet in der Originalfassung oder ein Bestseller wie Balance of Power" von Richard North Patterson - die fremdsprachigen eBooks sind nur einen Mausklick entfernt. Besonders im englischsprachigen Bereich haben eBooks Hochkonjunktur - dementsprechend groß ist die Auswahl.     Im umfangreichen Anhang (44 S.) sind Checklisten, Übungen und Schulungsunterlagen vor allem zur richtigen Kommunikation mit den Benutzern zu finden. Am Schluss des Buches befindet sich noch ein Stichwortverzeichnis. Beigelegt ist eine CD-ROM mit allen im Buch aufgeführten Übungen und Links, so dass man auch am Bildschirm darauf zurückgreifen bzw. sie ausdrucken kann. Hervorzuheben ist, dass das Buch als Arbeitsbuch ausgestattet ist, es gibt viel Raum für Notizen, es werden viele anschauliche Beispiele gegeben und zu jedem Kapitel werden mehrere Übungsaufgaben gestellt. Es ist ein typisches amerikanisches Einführungsbuch, das in beneidenswert anschaulicher und konsequent praktisch orientierter Art die Leserin/den Leser in ein neues Arbeitsfeld einführt, so dass man nach der Lektüre wirklich den Eindruck hat, in Stand gesetzt zu sein, einen solchen Service in professioneller Art und Weise aufbauen zu können. Vielleicht sollte noch hervorgehoben werden, dass die Autorin es verstanden hat, den Inhalt so zu gestalten, dass er ein längeres Haltbarkeitsdatum bietet: Obwohl alle grundsätzlichen Dinge abgehandelt werden, wie z.B. die Entscheidungsgrundlagen für eine Software, wird doch nie eine konkrete Software behandelt. Solche Angaben würden schnell veralten im Gegensatz zu den Kriterien, die Software beurteilen zu können. Die Autorin bemüht sich auch, Internet-Quellen aufzuführen und zu besprechen, wo man sich in diesen Fragen up to date halten kann. Ein Buch, das in die Hände all jener gehört, für welche die Einführung einer Online-Auskunft in Frage kommt. Hermann Rösch führte in seinem Artikel zum Schluss lediglich einige Universitätsbibliotheken an, welche bereits eine Online-Auskunft eingeführt haben. Werden die öffentlichen Bibliotheken einen solchen Dienst nur in kooperativer Art und Weise über die Deutsche Internetbibliothek anbieten? Hoffentlich nicht, da die Einrichtung eines Virtual Reference Desk eine hervorragende Gelegenheit darstellt, das Image der Bibliothek als Informationsvermittlungsstelle nachhaltig zu stärken und jenen Benutzern einen Zugang zur Information zu ermöglichen, welche nicht in die Bibliothek kommen. Jedenfalls gibt dieses Buch die Grundlage, das Für und Wider eines solchen Dienstes abzuwägen und im Falle einer Einrichtung auch die Schulung der betroffenen Auskunftsbibliothekarinnen/-bibliothekare auf eine solide Basis zu stellen."
