    Abstract
As CD-ROMs and CD-ROM drives proliferate, their large storage capacity beckons realt ime video applications. The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) video compression standard, that enables multimedia applications to present full screen video playback at up to 30 frames per second, promises to enhance CD-ROM applications by greatly expanding CD-ROM storage

    Abstract
Reviews the future possibilities of convergence of digital image storage and dissemination techniques, cable and high resolution television and networks such as the Internet, in bringing sophisticated multimedia information services into the home and businesses. Predicts the future of these systems in publishing, entertainment, education, health care, telephone systems, computer software use, and business and suggests that the ultimate converged system could provide homes and businesses with the means of sending and receiving information by facsimile transmission, making copies, and accessing information from CD-ROM and CD-I drives

    Abstract
Summarizes recent reports forecasting about trends in the multimedia market. Tinsley Robor plc, UK, forecasts continued growth and increasing CD-online hybridisation. Frost & Sullivan, UK, forecasts expansion in the CD and optical disk drive markets which are characterised by increasing capacity and performance. The Internet will be increasingly significant as a way of distributing data

    Abstract
Reviews the particular qualities of the CD-ROM and the World Wide Web on the Internet in their separate operation, and then makes out a case for their combined use. The need for such hybrid systems results from problems of bandwidth across networks, and presumably these difficulties may be resolved as network speeds are upgraded. In the meantime hybrid CD-ROM/WWW applications have the potential to deliver the necessary bandwidth for multimedia combined with the timeliness of the Web. Abstract
The introduction of multimedia into the library raises new questions concerning who the users are and how best to match services to their needs. An inquiry into the users of CD-ROMs in the Nancy mediatheque offers some answers to the questions. The choice of CD-ROMs and the way in which this service is used difers according to whether the public is active or not, and according to the kind of training followed. Far from being mutually antagonistic, reading of books and consultation of CD-ROMs seem to reinfornce each other
