    Abstract
Revision of the RAK alphabetical cataloguing rules for music libraries began in 1992. The revised rules were intended to move closer to the rules for academic libraries and to allow for reforms of rules for audiovisual media and non-book material. The rules cover printed music and some other media and are about definitions, bibliographic description, unit subject entries, main and subordinate entries, abbreviated and expanded cataloguing

    Abstract
Since the introduction of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) and the arrival of online public catalogues, librarians might ask whether number building is essential or whether the same result could be achieved with Boolean operators. Descriptive categories could be prepared, with word or phrase inversion, as a retrieval system component. The role of syntactic indexing in online retrieval and consequences for service interface ...

    Abstract
Librarians in West Germany have thesauri for subject cataloguing through the use of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) with the Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD - Standard Keyword Data File). There is controversy over the terminological properties of standard keyword data files, over whether SWD is universal and whether inductive vocabulary construction is successful here. Some RSWK chain components have no separate semantic isentity and, although SWD has several aids for definition precision, semantic structures are not fully expressed. At present cooperative cataloguing partners using RSWK should use SWD with it as a starting point and think about possible improvements. RSWK with SWD is at present unsuitable for personal computers

    Abstract
Large Swiss academic libraries stock 3 million titles documented in computerized catalogues. This data will be amalgamated with the Verbundkatalog Schweiz (VKS) to produce a national union catalogue. Unified cataloguing rules, clear definitions for data storage, operational guidelines and active participation of the original VKS database are needed. The government will help libraries financially according to their degree of participation in the project

    Abstract
RISM, the international catalogue of printed music, is in 2 series. Most volumes produced so far appeared between 1960-80 and need revision. Many countries now have new cataloguing rules in computer format. Series A/I should be put on a new basis after publication of the planned supplements. The PIKaDO database programme developed for manuscript documentation could be used also for printed work

    Abstract
In 1994 Polish libraries began using USMARC format for EDP. USMARC and RISM format (PIKaDO programme) are helpful in cataloguing, but special non-typical music scores casue problems since no standard applies here yet. It is hard to define 'old printed music', to decide whether the author is the composer or text author, to select the cataloguing depth needed to cope with limitations in existing fields for musical signs and notation. USMARC needs new symbols

    Abstract
Since 1985 the university has had computerized cataloguing and a network of cataloguing centres. The library uses SISIS online, with 2 different OPAC systems. A BS2000 dialogue cooperative now includes all branches, resulting in unified and rational cataloguing development. The catalogue OPAC system ELIS (Erlangen Library Information System) developed originally as an inhouse informal system. SISIS incorporates a loan system and is stored online by BVB

Cologne Library School ran a project to construct a database for literature on content cataloguing and fringe disciplines. Software was the BISMAS 1.0 programme and is now the 1.5 version. The category scheme, indexes and retrieval possibilities are described. Retrieval is mainly free text, using the whole document description and all descriptive categories. BISMAS does not permit standard data file administration so a further database was provided ...

    Abstract
The library contains 12.000 old maps from before 1850. In 1988 the library joined the old map cataloguing cooperative (comprising the state libraries of Bavaria and Lower Saxony and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) which was producing a computerized catalogue of old maps. Eichstätt joined offline in 1988 and changed to online in 1994 when MS-DOS was introduced. 9.047 maps have been catalogued so far, all accessible via the Internet and the Bavarian library cooperative

    Abstract
The library has a centre for buying, cataloguing and storing microform, audio-visual media and other non-book material. Cataloguing of microform is difficult, because of the wide range of subjects covered and the lack of cataloguing aids. The library uses some external services for on-line cataloguing of individual monographs in large microform collections. Some magnetic tapes with little entries are also bought from the Online Computer Library Center in Ohio. All periodicals and serials are entered as individual titles. The periodicals catalogue is available on-line and in microfiche form. Microfiche copies of German dissertations are catalogued on-line as an external service of the Deutsche Bibliothek. Foreign dissertations are catalogued on-line in Göttingen. The recently published union catalogue of large microform collections in West Germany will assist in cataloguing in future.

    Abstract
The Bavarian library ccoperative system began work in May 91 to support cooperative cataloguing and a scientific information netwotk. A central system and 30 local systems communicate via an intelligent program to program interface, which is being developed into an interface with logical data structure capable of being developed with other data bank systems. Identical OPACs as retrieval systems at regional, subregional and local levels are accessible on personal computers. During 1993 the system should link 1.000 internal and several thousand external computers; 40 libraries should be participating in on-line cataloguing

    Abstract
In 1990 the Berlin Hochschule der Künste began automated cataloguing of audio-visual media, using a local integrated system, planned to be compatible with other at local and supra-regional levels. The college is decentralised; OPAC facilities will be provided so that all library stocks will be accessible from all departments. The computerised cataloguing is well advanced; rare printed material has been covered since 1987, scores, monographs and indexes will be covered from 1992 and other media later. An archive is planned

    Abstract
Bochum university library's cataloguing automation work of 1963 pioineered developments in Germany and Europe. From 1060 external data were included and standards development began. The Bochum documentation system was taken over and developed by the North Rhine-Westphalian library cooperative. In 1985 online cataloguing was introduced. Some recataloguing is taking place. This work is expensive and time consuming, demanding highly qualified staff. Data once recorded can be reused for different purposes

    Abstract
In 1994 Munich public libraries introduced online cataloguing and chose to test the use of RSWK draft for music cataloguing. All parts of a subject heading chain proved to have equal weight and to be retrievable separately. Some aspects were not covered, so the draft must be discussed further

    Abstract
Report of an international conference on retrospective cataloguing in Europe of 15th-19th century material, Nov. 90. It is quicker to convert an old catalogue for electronic data processing than to compile a new catalogue, although problems with converted data can occur in union catalogues because of adequate standardisation
