    Abstract
Reviews literature on the main expert systems used in descriptive cataloguing. Discusses the features and problems of the three types of systems which have developed: advisory systems, systems to create bibliographic records and systems to carry out original cataloguing. The quantity and complexity of the rules of a cataloguing code make it difficult for them to be incorporated into the knowledge base of an expert system

    Abstract
Considers the issues of the filing order of bibliographic catalog entries as it relates to information retrieval. Discusses the main problems created by filing order in computerized catalogues and analyses the codes drawn up by the Library of Congress, the British Library and the American Library Association. Describes the efforts made by IFLA and ISO to arrive at greater international Uniformity of filing order rules. The resulting standards ISO 7154-1983 (Bibliographic filing principles) and ISO/TR 8393-1985 (Bibliographic filing rules) are described. Discusses the position of Spanish cataloguing rules in relation to these international standards

    Abstract
The development of new technologies in the last few decades has directly influenced the organization of technical services and the way they carry out so called 'technical tasks'. One of the most recent examples is the use of the Internet for technical work. Offers a selective presentation of resources available on the Internet for the personnel of technical services generally, and especially for acquisitions and cataloguing. Presents a summary review of how Internet resources are being used to the advantage of technical services in Catalan academic libraries. The 2nd part of the article will look at Internet resources intended for the processing of specific materials such as serials, electronic resources, special collections, etc.

    Abstract
Analyzes the terms used for the technical oeprations of information retrieval in Spanish legislation in university level library and information studies. Considers 'documentary analysis' and 'cataloguing' to be unsuitable for representing the standards proposed by the Council of Universities and the most recent professional literature. Discusses the library and information studies curriculum of the University of Salamanca

    Abstract
Account of the development of ISBD for cataloguing, focusing chiefly on the IFLA programme initiated at the International Meeting of Cataloguing Experts held in Copenhagen in 1969, which resulted in the 1974 1st official ed. of ISBD(M) for monographs. Versions were developed separately for serials (S), cartographic materials (CM) and non-book materials (NBM), resulting in incompatibilities resolved by the creation of a new general ISBD structure (G) in 1977. Since then new editions of (M), (S), (CM) and (NBM) have been produced, together with versions for printed music (PM) and ancient materials (A). The basic concepts of independence and uniformity underpin ISBD structure

    Abstract
Describes the latest trends in knowledge organization research. Provides a historical background covering the thesaurs period; the impact of Ranganathan's ideas and the foundation of the ISKO. Defines knowledge organization and explains its conceptual framework. Analyses current research from the Knowledge Literature supplement to Knowledge Organization covering automation and universal classification schemes; a universal thesaurus; new conceptual structures for knowledge organization; and the quality of indexing and cataloguing procedures. Recommends close cooperation between terminologies and knowledge organization researchers for facet analysis to progress

    Abstract
A discussion of the importance of clear cataloguing policies and routines as the basis of quality control, in relation to the methods used in the College of Mexico Library. The fundamental principle is to prevent errors occuring rather than to correct them subsequently. Indices of quality and effiency in relation to errors which do and do not affect retrieval, established through monthly review of samples of the work of each cataloguer, are used to monitor activities and ensure high standards. This process, essentially collaborative, promotes an overall culture of quality

    Abstract
Contemporary studies of information and documentation focus on 3 dimensions: the theoretical, i.e. the sciences of interpretation of text; the practical, i.e. the impact of new technology on systems of inscription; and the political, i.e. the consequent proceses of social identification and cultural autonomy. Documentation languages provide rules for transforming items of information into documentation products, and the process of information analysis fixes meaning by applying such rules in the context of collective experience. Information transfer and communication thus depends on a communicational contract setting out the parameters for negotiating meaning. This requires the information analyst and other professionals to discuss the rules of the information game openly with external participants, as the necessary condition for a democratic and equitable science of information

    Abstract
Makes a proposal for the optimization of first generation online catalogues which tries to unify the different institutional projects for the establishment of simplified ISBD standards and MARC formats, as well as the results of occasional studies and researches on cataloguing codification. Offers a feasible solution, for immediate application, for a definitive transition from card catalogue to automated catalogue

    Abstract
Account of the experience of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre CIMMYT based in Mexico, which employs some 100 scientists and 600 support staff. To improve services the library updated its system using DB/Textworks, software which can manage large quantities of text including both data and images. The system is structured into modules for cataloguing, circulation, user information, serials, acquisition and suppliers. The chief advantages for medium sized libraries such as CIMMYT is its simplicity; tasks such as defining databases, creating reports, exchanging information so not require the intervention of computer experts

    Abstract
The development of indexing languages to exploit the potential of new information and communication technology is based on the use of controlled vocabulary acting as a bridge between the languages of the author, user and indexer. Such conceptual models eliminate ambiguity and permit generic searching, in contrast to free text approaches. The most efficient type of controlled language is the thesaurus, which is comprehensible to end users, accepts modifications and is structured generically. The Latin American Library and Information Thesaurus now being developed highlights the need for a standardised language for professionals in LAtin America, where use of the common language, Spanish, differs between countries

    Abstract
Bradford's law is widely used in collection development to identify the most productive periodicals, but does nott take into account the variables of frequency of publication and number of years of publication during a particular time span. Hence not all periodicals necessarily have the same opportunity to publish relevant articles. To test this hypothesis, the productivity of American sociology periodicals during 1987-91 was analysed and shown to correlate with frequency of publication and number of years of publication, giving a more accurate representation than using Bradford's law as originally formulated
