- Abstract
- Teaching cataloguing requires the instructor to make strategic decisions about how to approach the variety and complexity of the field and to provide an adequate theoretical foundation while preparing students for their entry into the world of practice. Accompanying these challenges are the tactical demands of providing this instruction in a distance education environment. Rather than focusing on ways to support learners in catalogue record production, instructors may use a problem solving and decision making approach to instruction. In this paper, a way to conceptualize a decision making approach that builds on a foundation provided by theories of information navigation is described. This approach, which is called "wayfinding", teaches by having students learn to find their way in the sets of rules that are commonly used. The method focuses on instruction about the structural features of rule sets, providing basic definitions of what each of the "places" in the rule sets contain (e.g., "formatting personal names" in Chapter 22 of AACR2R) and about ways to navigate those structures, enabling students to learn not only about common rules but also about less well known cataloguing practices ("dragons"). It provides both pragmatic and pedagogical benefits and helps develop links between cataloguing practices and their theoretical foundations.

- Abstract
- Argues against various trends towards the downgrading of cataloguing in librarianship. These include the administrative response to the ready availability of shared catalogue records, the targeting of cataloguing positions when library budgets shrink, the 'supply and demand' attitude of library schools in the USA which less often insist on students studying cataloguing, and the lack of a core and prescriptive curriculum for library professionals sponsored by the ALA. The study of cataloguing and cataloguing theory promotes skills that ensure consistency, predictibility and repeatability of access to materials, and the lack of these skills among librarians harms the services they provide

- Abstract
- Since Library Science Education started in Nigeria about half a century ago, cataloguing has been regarded as a core subject in the curriculum. With the diversification of subjects, some core subjects were made electives. This did not affect cataloguing. Nigerian Libraries have not gone far in electronic data processing in their storage of data and information and as a result, libraries are still manual-oriented. Even though some libraries in Cross River State of Nigeria have taken their first steps towards automation, the library schools still find it necessary to continue to drill students in traditional cataloguing. The question of the relevance of cataloguing in an automated library system arises and this researcher investigates the hypothesis that cataloguing is still relevant in the library school curriculum using the descriptive survey methodology. The finding is that the manual system will continue to be used for a long time and so cataloguing will continue to be relevant even with the computer-produced catalogue.

- Abstract
- This paper discusses the education and training of both junior and professional staff for cataloguing at the University of Botswana Library and examines the formal library school education at the University of Botswana offered by the Department of Library and Information Studies (LIS). It focuses on education for cataloguing and classification with emphasis on descriptive cataloguing; subject access; classification; bibliographic control on books, and other library materials. The paper also discusses on-the job training and continuing education for librarians and junior library staff. This paper shows the relationship that existed between the Cataloguing unit and Subject Librarians before the restructuring of the Cataloguing and Acquisitions units in the late 1990s. That restructuring changed the relationship that existed between Cataloguing Unit and Subject Librarians regarding the cataloguing and classification of materials and the training activities organized by the Cataloguing unit for Subject Librarians in an attempt to ensure quality records. It touches on the training conducted outside the country. The paper draws information from official documents and the author's long experience in various levels and units of University of Botswana Library starting from year 1982.

- Abstract
- This paper discusses an innovative approach to teaching cataloguing. At Queensland University of Technology (QUT), students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Library and Information Studies were involved in an independent learning activity which aimed to develop LIS students' foundation knowledge of descriptive cataloguing, while simultaneously encouraging students to think critically about broader issues that would inevitably impact on their role as information professionals. In the self-study program, learning activities included an interactive multimedia CD-ROM and a printed workbook with exercises, augmented by the opportunity for group discussion in weekly tutorials to enable students to share key aspects of their independent learning. Students were asked to critically evaluate the CD-ROM and the workbook and also to develop their own professional views about the arguments for and against the inclusion of cataloguing in the LIS curriculum. The paper presents the outcomes of this pilot project.

- Abstract
- Cataloging is a dynamic and ever changing activity. Developments in codes and standards create a need for continuing reconsideration of the design of our curricula. Format integration, in particular, raises questions about the structure of curricula for cataloging and classification. The issues relating to differing formats of materials are not new, but the process of standardization of treatment, which was begun quite tentatively in the development of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR) has blossomed to the fore in the ensuing years. This paper examines the historical context of the integration of formats before addressing the continuing arguments that maintain that all types of materials should be treated in an introductory course as opposed to those that assert that format issues should not be covered in any depth in an introductory course. A design for an integrated, but not exhaustive, treatment of formats in an introductory course with more detailed coverage included in advanced courses is proposed.

- Abstract
- This article considers the current state in Australia of education for cataloguing and classification (considered broadly and encompassing descriptive cataloguing, subject access, classification, metadata, knowledge organisation, bibliographic control and other related areas for all formats of library resources). Data comes from subject and course descriptions located in the handbook entries and web sites of Australian programs in library and information studies, and from an informal survey of practising cataloguers and library educators. Conclusions are drawn about the range of subjects taught, their focus, and their levels.

- Abstract
- Purpose - Reflects on a paper extolling teaching cataloguing and indexing at library school written for Library Review in 1980. Design/methodology/approach - Reflective debate on the content of the original paper. Findings - The sentiments of the original paper were supported, with the added proviso that nowadays the ability to organise information is a basic skill everyone needs. Practical implications - May be of interest to practitioners and library educators interested in this long standing debate. Originality/value - Paper carries a response by the original author to the reflections on his paper.

- Abstract
- Purpose - This paper aims to examine the effectiveness of a series of in-house training offered to cataloguers and para-professional cataloguing staff at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. Design/methodology/approach - The instrument used for the survey was a questionnaire which sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the training over a two-year period. Through the application of a five-point Likert scale respondents were required to indicate their levels of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the training sessions. Findings - The paper reveals the relevance and effectiveness of a structured approach to cataloguing training and highlights the need for cataloguing staff to keep abreast of current trends through continuing education. It also demonstrates a dire need for greater collaboration between library schools and libraries in the development of proficiencies for entry level cataloguers. Research limitations/implications - The collective evaluation of professionals and para-professionals with varying levels of cataloguing knowledge and competencies impacted on the reliability of the data. Originality/value - The paper serves as a model for future cataloguing training at the St Augustine Campus Libraries and can be adapted by other libraries for meeting their training needs in cataloguing.

- Abstract
- Cataloguing education has been the focus of definition and ebate for over a century. Moving beyond cataloguing theory and the creation of records, to the management and process of producing catalogues, increases the complexity of demands placed on professionals and educators. Graduates need to understand their catalogues and integrated systems holistically. This requires a knowledge of each element, of standards governing the creation and maintenance of records, and of the relationship between the record and the catalogue and/or its constituent network. - Abstract
- A survey of postgraduate education and training for cataloguing and classification in the British Isles in late 2003 was carried out by consulting websites and sending an email request. Cataloguing and classification have become largely invisible in professional education, but it appears that most courses still include something about them, though not always as a compulsory module and usually without much practical work. The course at University College London is described. Views of recent graduates, and of chief cataloguers and other trainers, are included, and show that the general opinion is that not enough is being taught about cataloguing and classification. Finally the article looks at training given by commercial providers.

- Abstract
- The appropriateness of utilising a training resource programme consisting of a mix of media and technologies for the training of cataloguing students is evaluated. The findings from reported research and evaluation of the training resource programme made it possible to identify advantages and disadvantages of using such a programme. The results of the research enabled the researcher to derive guidelines for the design and development of a training resource programme consisting of a mix of media and technologies. The use of media and technologies, in a training research programme for cataloguing training, can be utilised in training cataloguing students in contact classes, distance education as well as in-service training.
