- Abstract
- The appropriateness of utilising a training resource programme consisting of a mix of media and technologies for the training of cataloguing students is evaluated. The findings from reported research and evaluation of the training resource programme made it possible to identify advantages and disadvantages of using such a programme. The results of the research enabled the researcher to derive guidelines for the design and development of a training resource programme consisting of a mix of media and technologies. The use of media and technologies, in a training research programme for cataloguing training, can be utilised in training cataloguing students in contact classes, distance education as well as in-service training.

The position of the cataloguing course in the curriculum and the content of the course are explained. The utilization of media and technologies in offering the course is discussed. - Abstract
- The interest of Australian academics in library and information studies is manifest in 2 themes: technology for information practice and technology for learning. These themes underlie the integration of information technology into education for information professionals. Surveys carried out in the early 1980s highlighted the applications of technology, particularly in online cataloguing and online searching. The study reported in this paper aimed to explore the extent of use and non-use od computer-assisted learning and teaching in Australian schools of library and information studies in the early 1990s. The results indicate more widespread use of computer-assisted learning than computer-assisted teaching. There is considerably diversity in courses where computer-assisted learning is included in the packages used by students. More than half of the schools surveyed have plans to extend computer-assisted learning over the next three years. In order to take full advantage of the potential of computer-assisted learning, academies in schools of library and information studies in Australia will need to cooperate with each other, with academics and industry-based colleagues in computer-based training and education, and with similar schools in overseas countries

- Abstract
- Wie müssen wir virtuelle Rundgänge und Online-Tutorials gestalten, damit sie ihre Zielgruppe auch wirklich erreichen? Worauf müssen wir bei einer guten Präsentation unseres OPACs achten? Was machen wir mit großen Schülergruppen? Diesen Fragen stellten sich insgesamt 22 Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare in Münster und Köln während zweier Fortbildungsveranstaltungen des HBZ im Juni 2003. Ziel der jeweils zweitägigen Workshops, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Adhoc-Arbeitsgruppe "Informationskompetenz" der AG der Universitätsbibliotheken im VBNW konzipiert wurden, waren Konzepte und erste Schritte zur Umsetzung von elektronischen Angeboten zur Vermittlung von Bibliotheksbzw. Informationskompetenz. Dem voraus ging die konstruktive Bewertung von bereits existierenden Materialien, die zum einen von den Teilnehmern aus ihren Bibliotheken mitgebracht wurden, zum anderen über Bibliotheks-Homepages abrufbar waren. Die Teilnehmer, die in ihren Bibliotheken bereits Benutzerschulungen konzipieren und durchführen, beschäftigten sich dabei in Gruppen u.a. mit den Themen - Virtuelle Rundgänge, - Online-Tutorials - Bibliothekseinführungen für Schüler und Erstsemester - Präsentationen von Online-Katalog und Methoden zur Literatursuche. Im Folgenden werden einige wesentliche und manchmal durchaus kontrovers diskutierte Ergebnisse und Thesen wiedergegeben, die sich aus der Arbeit der Teilnehmer ergeben haben. Sie erheben keinen Anspruch auf Ausgewogenheit oder Vollständigkeit, können aber als Anregungen und Diskussionsgrundlage für zukünftige Projekte dienen.

- Unlike other presentation modalities, computer based educational applications provide a means of changing the perception of time through automatic manipulation of the user interface, content difficulty, and technical complexitiy as defined by the application author. Temporal cues can be used to enhance the user's perception of time and support the educational process. Gives examples from medical education and clinical competence testing

- Abstract
- The author takes on the assertion posed in recent educational articles that technology is driving down book circulation and contributing to the decline of reading-center learning. In his interview with Richard Cochran, Dean of the Ferris State University Library for Information, Technology, and Education, the two discuss the importance of incorporating technology to support all types of learning, and using faculty buy-in to insure that as many media as possible are integrated into the final building design.

- Abstract
- This paper investigates an innovative approach to training non-traditional employees, particularly student workers, in a library cataloging department. The author presents guidelines and pedagogical aspects of using e-learning courseware for basic cataloging training, reviews the challenges and difficulties encountered in the project, and introduces the content and structure of prototype 2 of the courseware. This e-learning courseware for basic cataloging can be adapted to facilitate the training of other groups of new staff in the cataloging department.
