    Abstract
In subject cataloging of audiovisual materials generic terms like 'documentary' or 'absolute film' facilitate the work of users and librarians. On the concrete level the study shows 4 ways to make a list of generic terms for the application in general libraries. The heuristic function of the study is to offer methods towards the solution of problems in the field of subject cataloguing of non-book materials. (1) The formal subject heading in library science corresponds to generic terms; Anglo-American and German rules for subject cataloging, however, provide no list that is directly applicable. (2) The terminology of institutions administering many audiovisual documents has been examined; general libraries have to find a common denominator with medium depth of classification and balanced representation of fiction and nonfiction terms. (3) From encyclopedic definitions of generic terms 8 dimensions have been extracted characterizing the terms in question individually. (4) The contribution of communication science has been discussed explaining a research project

    Abstract

    Abstract
Librarians in West Germany have thesauri for subject cataloguing through the use of Regeln fur den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK - Subject Cataloguing Rules) with the Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD - Standard Keyword Data File). There is controversy over the terminological properties of standard keyword data files, over whether SWD is universal and whether inductive vocabulary construction is successful here. Some RSWK chain components have no separate semantic isentity and, although SWD has several aids for definition precision, semantic structures are not fully expressed. At present cooperative cataloguing partners using RSWK should use SWD with it as a starting point and think about possible improvements. RSWK with SWD is at present unsuitable for personal computers

    Abstract
The German subject headings authority file - SWD - provides a terminologically controlled vocabulary, covering all fields of knowledge. The subject headings are determined by the German Rules for the Subject Catalogue. The authority file is produced and updated daily by participating libraries from around Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Over the last twenty years, it grew to an online-accessible database with about 550.000 headings. They are linked to other thesauri, also to French and English equivalents and with notations of the Dewey Decimal Classification. Thus, it allows multilingual access and searching in dispersed, heterogeneously indexed catalogues. The vocabulary is not only used for cataloguing library materials, but also web-resources and objects in archives and museums.

    Abstract
The University and Regional Library (ULB) of Münster in Westphalia indexes its documents since 1990 with Regeln für den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK) and Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD), the German rules for subject indexing and its authority file. In this area the library profits from the regional and national cooperation, particularly from the German National Library's external services for new German publications. The ULB itself has to index primarily new foreign literature, for instance Dutch books within the scope of the special subject fields programme of the German Research Society (DFG), but also its numerous acquisitions of older books and collections. Also some retrospective conversion has been done in the field of subject cataloguing. In the ULB indexing is the task of the subject librarians. They are supported by a small local editorial staff which especially takes care of the subject catalogue management and cooperates with the North-Rhine Westphalian library network for academic libraries, HBZ in Cologne. Furthermore, in its function as the Regional Library of Westphalia the ULB indexes books and above all a great number of articles listed in the regional bibliography of North Rhine-Westphalia (NWBib). Abstract
The RSWK-draft on music cataloguing was tested in sound recordinga cataloguing. The basic 4 part chain schme maintains the older facet concept. Experiences were generally positive, especially with some collected works. There are still some reservations about the draft, especially for doing away with provenance and period description

    Abstract
In 1994 Munich public libraries introduced online cataloguing and chose to test the use of RSWK draft for music cataloguing. All parts of a subject heading chain proved to have equal weight and to be retrievable separately. Some aspects were not covered, so the draft must be discussed further

    Abstract
The article is a tribute to Magda Heiner-Freiling's activities concerning subject indexing, revolving particularly around her time as Head of Subject Cataloguing at the German National Library. It shows that her differentiated understanding of the manifold tasks of cataloguers relating to subject indexing is pathbreaking for the future of Subject Cataloguing in modern libraries.

    Abstract
The »Clearingstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken«, an information, coordinating and supporting centre in the field of subject cataloguing for public libraries at the German National Library, was founded in 1991 by Magda Heiner-Freiling, who always kept the special needs and the benefit of the public libraries in mind. She was also one of the driving forces in the realization of the subject cataloguing of fiction and children's literature at »Die Deutsche Bibliothek« in 1993. The actual work process in the »Clearingstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken« is as follows: The librarian in charge transfers questions and proposals from public libraries concerning subject cataloguing to the subject librarians, who decide whether the requests and suggestions are accepted or refused. These national bibliographic services of the German National Library for public libraries are highly appreciated and widely used.

    Abstract
Using all facets as subject haedings according to RSWK-Musik might be sensible in academic music libraries, but would be too complex and costly in public libraries. A reduced revised version could contain rules usable by all public music libraries. Daily work with the draft version would lead to error correction and gap-filling
