    Abstract
This report constitutes Phase I of a two-part study; a Phase II report will discuss subject cataloging. Phase I is concerned with the materials of a library as individual records (or documents) and as representations of certain works by certain authors--that is, with descriptive, or bibliographic, cataloging. Discussed in the report are (1) the history, role, function, and oblectives .of the author-and-title catalog; (2) problems and principles of descriptive catalogng, including the use and function of "main entry, the principle of authorship, and the process and problems of cataloging print and nonprint materials; (3) organization of the catalog; and (4) potentialities of automation. The considerations inherent in bibliographic cataloging, such as the distinction between the "book" and the "work," are said to be so elemental that they are essential not only to the effective control of library's materials but also to that of the information contained in the materials. Because of the special concern with information, the author includes a discussion of the "Bibliographic Dimensions of Information Control," 'prepared in collaboration with Robert M. Hayes, which also appears in "American Documentation," VOl.201 July 1969, p. 247-252.

    Abstract
Definition of a conceptual reference model to provide a framework for the analysis of non-administrative metadata relating to library resources. The resulting model definition was approved by the FRBR Review Group (November 2016), and then made available to the Standing Committees of the Sections on Cataloguing and Subject Analysis & Access, as well as to the ISBD Review Group, for comment in December 2016. The final document was approved by the IFLACommittee on Standards (August 2017).

    Abstract
The aim of the CATRIONA (Cataloguing and Retrieval of Information over Networks Applications) feasibility study was to investigate the technical, organizational and financial requirements for the development of applications software and procedures to enable the cataloguing, calssification and retrieval of documents and other resources over networks such as the Internet. The CATRIONA feasibility study demonstrated that the idea of a distributed catalogue of Internet resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces is already a practical proposition at its most basic level. Proposes that the next step should be a distributed CATRIONA demonstrator project, based on the Scottish University and Research Libraries (SCURL) group of libraries cooperating to catalogue local electronic resources and selected areas of BUBL Subject Trees, but also sufficiently 'open' to encompass other sites, projects and approaches

    Content
The Library is consulting with stakeholders concerning the potential impact of these proposals. No firm decisions have yet been taken regarding either of these standards. FAST 1. The British Library proposes to adopt FAST selectively to extend the scope of subject indexing of current and legacy content. 2. The British Library proposes to implement FAST as a replacement for LCSH in all current cataloguing, subject to mitigation of the risks identified above, in particular the question of sustainability. DDC 3. The British Library proposes to implement Abridged DDC selectively to extend the scope of subject indexing of current and legacy content.

    Abstract
Reports results of a study to explore the possibilities of extending the use of structured abstracts (which use subheadings such as background, aims, participants method, results, conclusions) of the type often found in biomedical periodicals; to test whether or not such structured abstracts are more easily searched, comprehended and recalled than abstracts set in the traditional manner; and to examine readers' preferences for different typographic settings for structured abstracts. Results indicated: that it is possible to produce structured abstracts for periodical articles in the social sciences; and that such abstracts may be easier to read, search and recall than abstracts presented in the traditional manner. Suggests that abstracts use 6 subheadings (background, aims, method, results, conclusions, and, optionally, comment) and recommends that these subheadings are conveyed in bold capital letters and, ideally, set apart from the main text by printer's rules

    Abstract
Access of digital materials continues to be an issue of great significance in the development of digital libraries. The proliferation of information in the networked digital environment poses challenges as well as opportunities. The author reports on a wide array of activities in the field. While this publication is not intended to be exhaustive, the reader will find, in a single work, an overview of systems of knowledge organization and pertinent examples of their application to digital materials

    Abstract
The final report of the 2nd British Library abstracting project (the BLAB project), 1990-1992, which was carried out partly at the Computing Department of Lancaster University, and partly at the Centre for Computational Linguistics, UMIST. This project built on the results of the first project, of 1985-1987, to build a system designed create abstracts automatically from given texts

    Abstract
Over the past 50 years, a variety of language-related capabilities has been developed in machine translation, information retrieval, speech recognition, text summarization, and so on. These applications rest upon a set of core techniques such as language modeling, information extraction, parsing, generation, and multimedia planning and integration; and they involve methods using statistics, rules, grammars, lexicons, ontologies, training techniques, and so on. It is a puzzling fact that although all of this work deals with language in some form or other, the major applications have each developed a separate research field. For example, there is no reason why speech recognition techniques involving n-grams and hidden Markov models could not have been used in machine translation 15 years earlier than they were, or why some of the lexical and semantic insights from the subarea called Computational Linguistics are still not used in information retrieval.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Discusses articles in which indexing of image collections receives virtually no mention and continues with comments about articles in which indexing receives special attention. Describes four major indexing systems: Library of Congress, AAT, ICONCLASS and TELCLASS. Discusses new indexing approaches where the use of descriptive words is being replaced by other methods of retrieval. Describes indexing by content (attempting to match an input image to a database collection) and by using a visual thesaurus. Raises questions about indexing for various kinds of collections and discusses indexing philosophy

    Abstract
Aims to provide an accurate and comprehensive bibliographic description of Canadian science fiction and fantasy literature in english language pulp magazines published between 1896 and 1955, a fragile and increasingly elusive periodical genre which contains a virtually unknown selection of popular fiction and art by Canadians. The arrangement is alphabetical under the following headings: author index; title index; artist index; magazine index; and series index
