    Abstract
The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition, aim at universal applicability. Some problems brought forth through the translation process and the laws in the workability of rules in a nonEnglish working language are examined. This leads to acknowledge the failure of AACR2 to acquire an international adaptability. Enquiry into the needs of potential users is advised.

    Abstract
The publication of the 1988 revision of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) represents an occasion for reflection on the nature and function of cataloguing rules in the 1990s. There is little evidence to suggest that the 1988 revision takes account of the new opportunities offered to cataloguers by the advent of on-line public access catalogues (OPACs).

    Abstract
After 25 years of service, this professional text has been updated in line with developments in the field of library science. Since the seventh edition of this standard text was published in 1985, there have been changes in virtually every area of bibliographic control. "AACR2 Revised" (AACR2R) has been implemented; new editions of or supplements to LCSH, LC classification, and DDC, and "Sears" have appeared; OCLC has adopted the PRISM format; and networking and online catalogues have become a way of life. Taylor addresses these and other changes in this edition. Consequently, many chapters of this text are entirely new, such as "Cataloguing in Context" and "Subject Arrangement of Library Materials", or fully revised such as "Development of Cataloguing Codes", which has been expanded to show the continuity in the development leading to publication of AACR2R. Two appendices have been added: an introduction to USMARC format and instructions for typing catalogue cards, including a detailed analysis of the punctuation and spacing to be used when conforming to the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD).

    Abstract
The history of cataloging pseudonyms is reviewed. The second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules reverses a century-long cataloging practice by allowing authors who use several pseudonyms to be entered in the catalog under each name. The AACR2 rule violates the catalog's objectives as formulated by Lubetzky, and is contradictory to AACR2's own internal logic. The number of disadvantages to the rule far outweigh any advantages. The rule should be replaced.

The authors take the reader through a comprehensive exposition of cataloguing - the definitions, arrangement and role of the catalogue: the history of its development; standardization and AACR2; the subject approach via pre-and post-coordinate indexing; analysis; filing rules and methods; the physical forms of the catalogue; the use of the computer in cataloguing; the role of networks; the management of cataloguing; and the relevance of book indexing. There is a detailed index, as well as a list of abbreviations and acronyms and a glossary of terms.

    Abstract
In subject cataloging of audiovisual materials generic terms like 'documentary' or 'absolute film' facilitate the work of users and librarians. On the concrete level the study shows 4 ways to make a list of generic terms for the application in general libraries. The heuristic function of the study is to offer methods towards the solution of problems in the field of subject cataloguing of non-book materials. (1) The formal subject heading in library science corresponds to generic terms; Anglo-American and German rules for subject cataloging, however, provide no list that is directly applicable. (2) The terminology of institutions administering many audiovisual documents has been examined; general libraries have to find a common denominator with medium depth of classification and balanced representation of fiction and nonfiction terms. (3) From encyclopedic definitions of generic terms 8 dimensions have been extracted characterizing the terms in question individually. (4) The contribution of communication science has been discussed explaining a research project

    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the implications of abandoning the main entry in online catalogs. The approach we take is to explore the consequences of deleting direct and indirect references to main entry in Chapter 21 in the second edition of the Anglo-American Calaloguing Rules (AACR2). Three classes of problematic rules result when this deletion is performed. First there are rules, which when converted, become awkward or non-sensical. Second there are rules which under conversion become overly complex. Third there are converted rules which cannot be easily operationalized.

    Abstract
Examines a simpler cataloguing format offered by PCs, without disturbing compatibility, using A-Z cataloguing rules for data input, category codes for tagging and computer-supported data input through windows. Gives numerous examples of catalogue entries, basing techniques on certain category schemes set out by Klaus Haller and Hans Popst. Examines catalogue entries in respect of categories of data bases for authors and corporate names, titles, single volume works, serial issues of collected works, and limited editions of works in several volumes.

    Abstract
The reasons why duplicate records should be avoided in an on-line catalogue are discussed. A mechanism has to be developed either to warn the cataloguer when he is about to enter a duplicate record or to prohibit duplicate entries entirely. Since different interpretations of cataloguing rules may lead to different and thus duplicate records, an institution, committee, or the like is needed to decide on the application of the rules and eliminate records, if necessary.

    Abstract
Paper presented at the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) Conference, Vienna, 1988, at the Cataloguing Committee's session. In making entries of edited audiovisual material there a two sets of rules in existence in West Germany both of which are described. Identifies 8 types of material for each of which there are prescribed cataloguing rules; the visual re-presentation for projection; film; multi-media; slide show with synchronised sound and commentary; sound recordings; group of games; and audiovisual material in microform.

    Abstract
Reviews the organisation of the work of cataloguing standardisation in France and in standards published or in preparation. French standards follow IFLA reommendations on rules for bibliographic descriptions and headings. Standardisation of formats is less developed; however MARC is gaininig ground as a national exchange format, whilst USMARC is also used by university and public libraries. French policy on cataloguing standards aims both to promote international exchange of biblio-graphic recordswhile respecting national access requirements, and to simplify cataloguing by promoting the use of medium-level bibliographic records.
