    Abstract
After a brief review of the history of the development of cataloguing rules for cartographic materials, both within the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules community and internationally, the author discusses the differences of the cataloguing of this material in archives compared with that in libraries. He states that the cataloguing of this material in archives relates to how the material was created or produced in the context of how it was used. Archival cataloguing (or archival description as archivists prefer to call the process) emphasizes methodology over the material itself. The paper attempts to give a short overview of the methodologies, their development and application. It uses diagrams and an example to illustrate the archival methodology and concludes that cataloguing records and archival description records produced by these methods may co-exist on the same database but that current computer systems developed for library applications have, in general, not developed the capability to display open hierarchically structured linked multilevel descriptions such as required by the archival methodology of multilevel description.

    Abstract
Many English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries have adopted the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd Edition after both its 1978 publication and its 1988 revision. Indeed, it has been translated into fourteen languages. This study examines some of the reasons why AACR has been internationally adopted and some of the problems encountered by various countries attempting to adapt it to a non-Anglo-American environment or translate it for a non-English-speaking environment. We examine whether AACR can be revised into a universal code or whether it must coexist with one or more other codes. We then examine the experiences of various countries that have adopted AACR2.

    Abstract
Gives a background to the development of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and discusses how the current situation has come about. Describes an outline of the working structure the present situation and how it may, or may not progress in the next five years. Examines whether all benefits from the use of such a code have been derived and whether future progress is possible

    Abstract
Highlights the striking parallels between S.R. Ranganathan' Classified Catalogue Rules (CCC) and the AACR2. Analyses the following concepts of the Canons of Cataloguing in CCC: ascertainability, prepotency, individualization, currency, consistency, laws of interpretation, principle of local variation, principle of osmosis, centralied cataloguing and printing of cards, and prenatal cataloguing. Studies the canon of individualization and its application to the names of persons, corporate bodies and conferences, georgraphic names, uniform titles, monographic series and serials. Analyses the concepts of classis, isolates, types of reference, book index entry, multi volumed book, union catalogue, national bibliography, indexing, tracing, and new kind of documents

    Abstract
As a standard set of rules, AACR2 has received much attention in the literature of descriptive cataloguing. Considers that despite this extensive literature, an important aspect of the code, namely its relevance to the online environment, has not received much attention, particularly in terms of empirical research. Notes however that there is a general criticism that AACR2, being based on manual systems, does not correspond effectively to the online environment. From a review of the literature concludes that while the advent of online catalogues has changed both the internal structure and external appearance of library catalogues, a mojority of writers consider that radical changes in the code are impossible and undesirable in the near future, owing to various factors such as the belief that that MARC format is not conductive to radical change and the large size of existing catalogues created according to the current rules

    Abstract
The chief of cataloguing policy and support office at the LoC presents her views on the usefulness of conceptual modelling in determining future directions for cataloguing and the MARC format. After describing the evolution of bibliographic processes, suggests usign the entity-relationship conceptual model to step back from how we record information today and start thinking about what information really means and why we provide it. Argues that now is the time to reexamine the basic principles which underpin Anglo-American cataloguing codes and that MARC formats should be looked at to see how they can evolve towards a future, improved structure for communicating bibliographic and authority information

    Abstract
Discusses the development of cataloguing rules for audiovisual media in Austria in recent years, and the publication of ÖNORM A 2653, which encapsulates these rules, in 1991. Describes the main features of these rules; the concept of the audiovisual underlining them; their inclusion of unpublished material; the presence of content analysis in the bibliographic description, and the fact that they are aimed at computer cataloguing

    Abstract
Examines in detail the author cataloguing practices adopted by the Italian National Library Service, as set out in its 1995 Cataloguing Guide (Guida SBN), and discusses how far these practices accord with the standard 1979 RICA author cataloguing rules. Since the author headings prescribed by RICA include personal names, corporate names and titles, this survey looks at all such SBN catalogue entries having an access point function. Presents many examples of standard and variant forms of heading, and reviews control procedures

    Abstract
Describes a project aimed at adapting a NeXT computer as a cataloguing workstation and employing a magneto optical disc as storage medium and Digital Librarian software. The workstation was evaluated by loading the floppy disc version of AACR2, supplied by the American Library Association, onto the magneto optical disc and running the workstation for 3 months with 6 cataloguers

    Abstract
Reports on an analytical study to examine the cataloguing rules in AACR2 to reveal practices for indicating bibliographic relationships in cataloguing records and identify types of relationships. Relationships defined and investigated were: equivalence; derivative; descriptive; whole-part; accompanying; sequential; and shared characteristic relationships. Each type of bibliographic relationship has had several linking devices used to connect bibliographic entities. The technology available to create and maintain a catalogue has greatly influenced the types of linking devices included in the catalogue and prescribed in cataloguing rules

    Abstract
IFLA has encouraged the creation of national bibliographies and the exchange of bibliographic data. Reviews the benefits from the exchange of authority data and considers to what extent such benefits may be realised. Discusses the economic benefits of cooperation; universal bibliographic control; and authority data. Presents case studies of the Anglo-American Authority File and Project Author, an example of how efficiencies may be achieved by making authority data public

    Abstract
Library information searching lacks a descriptive theory which explains how a user decides to borrow one book and not another. Such theory should act as a reference framework against which cataloguing rules and the classification system can be measured, and should be based on 2 complementary perspectives, described in detail: modern classification theory, which explains what cataloguing and classification involve, and philosophy of science, which explains what happens when the user meets the catalogue record. Catalogue information must answer which work is described, and why this work on the subject is chosen. A descriptive theory is especially necessary for knowing what new information to add to the catalogue. Discusses this in a subsequent article
