    Abstract
    Presentation of the rules (canons) which S.R. Ranganathan laid down for the three planes of work, the idea plane, the verbal plane and the notational plane and explanation of each of these 34 canons, indispensable tools for the establishment of any classification system. An overall survey of the canons is given
