    Describes the problems caused by the growth of bibliographic databases. Major problems are caused by seacrh systems based on Boolean operations because of the slowness, broad indexing and user difficulties due to present user links and search systems. Some suggested solutions are: use of combined search algorithms, more specific indexing, thesauri and improved user links

    Abstract
    The concept of equivalence is considered in the context of compatibility of thesauri. Intra and interlanguage equivalence in natural languages as well as linguistic equivalence versus descriptor equivalence are specified. The consideration leads to the definition of 2 new concepts: dictionary equivalence and indexing equivalence, which are both instances of descriptor equivalence. Indexing equivalence is further divided into potential and concrete indexing equivalence. The potential indexing equivalence between the descriptors of Liikunnan ja urheilung asiasanasto (Subject headings forphysical education and sport) and the Canadian Sport Thesaurus is then described in the light of 2 different descriptor collections

    Abstract
    The contemporary user centred research paradigm in the study of information needs, seeking, and use is critically evaluated with regard to its ideological presuppositions. Discussed Carol C. Kuhlthau's theory of information seeking as an example of a research approach that seems to ignore its ideological nature. In Kuhlthau's theory, the actor is discursively constituted according to subject-object dualisms prevailing in modernity's conception of human identity. This conception draws sharp distinctions between the categories of mind-body and individual-society and has been heavily criticized. Claims that the discourse used by Kuhlthau is closely connected to the interests of the library professionals trying to improve their social status in contemporary Western society. Considers some ways to overcome the methodological individualism characterizing contemporary user centred research
