    Abstract
In theory, classificationists always avoid critical classification: that is, the introduction of their own bias and prejudices into the schemes they compile. In practice, all the schemes available to librarians reflect to a greater or lesser degree the prejudices of their origins. In some cases it is difficult to see any justification for this; for example, the peculiar attitude toward women shown by many schemes. In other cases schemes reflect perhaps too closely the culture on which they are based. No solution is proposed, but it is important that librarians be aware of the problems

    Abstract
Neither in theory nor in practice does contemporary classification ignore temporal sequence in the sense of history. But it is regarded in a rather static way, as if classification could be reduced to some unique landscape to be viewed by the classifier as from a balloon. ...

    Abstract
Any classification describes some structure of taxons on a subject field. Thus, one of the natural aspects of a classification theory is the study of possible taxon structure types. In particular, two classifications generating isomorphic taxon structures (regardless of size or how filled they are) could quite rightly be said to be of the same type. Let us formulate this situation in precise terms. Assume M is the subject field of the classification (the class of all objects to be classified). We use T to denote the set of taxon subclasses identified by the classificational features. On taxon set T the is a natural order of inclusion

    Abstract
The Preserved Context Index System (PRECIS) developed for subject indexing for the BNB is discussed as a basis for various studies relating to classification which could be made from its initial phrases, strings, entries and back-up structure. Specific possibilities include use of mehodologies such as Goffman's "indirect method", Fox's "characterization" of rules, derivation of empirical hyperbolic distributions, and lognormal distributions. The relationship of existing methods of subject analysis to each other through PRECIS is explored. Brief samples are included

    Abstract
Salient node notation is a technique for decreasing the average length of notation in a classification scheme without sacrficing expressiveness or disturbing the succession of chracteristics of the filing order. Assignment of notation begins at a node of the classification tree other than the root. This salient node may be determined algorithmically, given data on the bias of the collection to be classified, even if only part of the tree has been developed. A dummy value is reserved to indicate upward movement in the tree. The technique is especially applicable to classification schemes for spevialized collections and to facets such as space in which the biases of human existence are especially prominent
