- Abstract
- In the classification of fiction literature in public libraries its presentation on shelves and its depth analysis in card files or selective bibliographies should supplement each other. In the article some less known traditions in the English-language area of thematical classification schemes in Germany of the twenties and since World War II are investigated. Concludingly some principles in the form of theses are stated which should be observed in the subject analysis of fiction lietrature in order to be able to meet fully the multiplicity of readers' requests

- Abstract
- The Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC) system, extensively used in Japanese libraries, was devised in 1929. It is difficult to use NDC to classify world literature, such as fiction in English by non American, non British writers. This is not necessarily straightforward in other classification schemes but a survey of 40 Japanese university libraries, of which 24 responded, showed remarkable inconsistencies in the treatment of 22 world literature authors. NDC clearly needs updating to deal with this problem

- Public libraries offer fiction readers various approaches to retrieve reading matter: shelving systems that facilityte browsing, knowledgable staff bibliographic aids and also user training and reader guidance. Despite these alternatives, readers often experience difficulty in identifying relevant fiction and no single factor can be isolated as the main cause. Classifies shelving systems and bibliographic aids do not take into account the fiction reader's approach. The nature of fiction does not allow for content to be moulded into any formal knowledge structure. - Abstract
- This paper examines the need for increased subject catalog access to imaginative literature, focusing on the environment of the academic/research library. New trends in scholarship have created more need for such subject access. We can develop a basis for subject access to imaginative literature by examining the historical treatment of imaginative literature and by drawing upon the past and present work of librarians, other information professionals such as indexers, and literary scholars. While many information professionals have recognized a need for increased subject access to individual works of imagination, there has been no clear consensus on how to do this. This paper represents a step forward in that direction, showing how we might use LCSH to express the themes or topics of an imaginative work. It is important that such subject access be multi-dimensional, identifying both concrete and abstract levels of meaning. Using The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an example, it is demonstrated how LC-type subject headings using LC subject terms with genre/form subdivisions can be developed.

- Describes the OCLC Fiction Project from the point of view of a cataloguer participating in it. The project, which has been in existence since 1991, involves adding subject headings to catalogue records on the OCLC union catalogue for individual works of fiction. Discusses the 4 types of access to individual works of fiction: from/genre, character(s), geographical setting and topical. - Abstract
- Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

- Abstract
- This article reports research that used descriptor subfields in MLA Bibliography online to quantify literary warrant in the domain of scholarly work about fiction (i.e., 'fiction studies'). The research used Hulme's concept of literary warrant and Kernan's description of the interactive processes of literature and literary scholarship to justify quantifying existing subject indexing in existing bibliographic records as a first step in the domain analysis of a field. It was found that certain of the MLA Bibliography onle's descriptor subfields and certain of the descriptor terms within those subfields occured more often than would occur by chance. The techniques used in the research might be extended to domain analysis of other fields. Use of the methodology might improve the ability to evaluate existing and to design future subject access systems

- Considers the recent trend towards the promotion, by public libraries, of literary fiction with particular reference to a new fiction initiative by the British Library which seeks to redress the imbalance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. - The broadside ballads collections at Oxford University's Bodleian Library comprise over 30,000 titles and are an important resource for researchers in popular literature between the 16th and 19th centuries. The creation of a digital database of the ballads has presented the challenge of cataloguing and indexing a large collection of documents containing both textual and visual material. Discusses issues surrounding the subject indexing using ICONCLASS of the woodcut illustrations of the ballads, including: differences between the cataloguing and indexing of images and of texts; how the indexing of visual and textual material should be integrated; how successful is ICONCLASS in establishing communication between the indexer and the user; and what is the appropriate interface for a large collection of items with a wide variety of potential users
