    Abstract
Paper presented at the Database Users' Conference in Toronto, 8.11.90. Discusses the reasons why it is the worst of times for most vendors developing software. Lists searching problems experienced by end users and discusses the difficulty of obtaining information by vendors from informed users in a timely manner. Presents a summary of screen design guidelines suggested as a result of 3 invitational conferences, held between 1984-86 to discusses results of research on screen design, and which caused some vendors to improve their system

    Abstract
It is time to progress beyond the 'same old systems' approach to OPACs into an era that incorporates improvements in libraries' existing databases, embraces research results into the information seeking process, and makes fundamental improvements to OPACs by adding new databases. This approach should convert the frustrated users of today into the eager users of tomorrow's local library systems

    Abstract
The author presents the environment of the OPAC as a new revenue stream of high potential. He suggests that the abstracting and indexing community is neglecting this important source and suggests industry-wide adoption of open standards as a remedy
