- Abstract
- Confirms the accuracy of a prediction 4 years ago that the CD-ROM graphic interfaces then available would be rivalled in online. Many Web based services now outperform CD-ROM models and magazine pages often look better on the Web than on CD-ROM. Desirable, but not widely available, is the facility to download data from CD-ROM databases. The best CD-ROM authority and retrieval software packages with impressible capabilities remain expensive but there are reasonably priced alternatives for Web publishing and database searching, many of which are derived from CD-ROM originals. A new software development which allows replication of Web sites on CD-ROM will feature in articles in future issues of 'Information today'

- Abstract
- Reviews the current market for CD-ROM databases with particular reference to the online versus CD-ROM versus print debate. Concludes that the most likely scenario is a steady convergence of technologies, at least until the end of the century. Review the current and the most likely future developments in the area of CD-ROM database contents, software, hardware, and marketing. Concludes that users will choose databases on the basis of such factors as: ease of use; power of use; storage and delivery capacity; quality; functionaliy; timeliness; overall appeal; and real cost, not just price. Lists the most likely candidates for successful CD-ROM database development; not yet available. Concludes that Windows user faces will steadily replace DOS based systems, but not unless the Windows replacements are truly better and not just different. Recommends that both Windows and DOS interfaces be loaded onto the same CD-ROM with each database allowing the user to choose which to use. Reviews likely developments in CD-ROM hardware and marketing strategies

- Abstract
- Reviews the particular qualities of the CD-ROM and the World Wide Web on the Internet in their separate operation, and then makes out a case for their combined use. The need for such hybrid systems results from problems of bandwidth across networks, and presumably these difficulties may be resolved as network speeds are upgraded. In the meantime hybrid CD-ROM/WWW applications have the potential to deliver the necessary bandwidth for multimedia combined with the timeliness of the Web. - Abstract
- Little research has compared youngsters' use of CD-ROM and the Internet for information-seeking purposes. Nevertheless, the area has recently been addressed within a largely qualitative project more generally devoted to young people's information universes. Home access to the Internet was seen to be more limited than that to CD-ROM, although the former was consulted to tackle needs of a greater number of types. The strategies employed to exploit each form of information resource were essentially similar. No attempts were reported to check the credibility of any information retrieved from electronic sources. The Internet was, however, used more frequently beyond the informants' own homes than was CD-ROM. There was also greater employment of the Internet by adults acting an the youngsters' behalf. As Internet use for school purposes rose in accordance with age, that of CD-ROM declined. When youngsters themselves compared the two resources as information-seeking tools, CD-ROM software was criticized for its lack of detailed material and the Internet for the problems in locating what was desired. Project findings have implications in a range of areas, including the marketing of CD-ROM packages, research and development and practices within schools.

- Reviews the main features of Computer Select: a CD-ROM database from Ziff Communications, Co., New York, which provides the full text of over 60 computer periodicals and is designed to enable users of information on software and suppliers, of the type found in 'PC magazine', but which is difficult to find by browsing printed copies of such periodicals. - Abstract
- Contribution to an issue devoted on the weeding and maintenance of reference collections. CD-ROM has become part of the library universe and increasing numbers of libraries are considering the acquisition of reference tools in the new format. Issues of evaluation and selection, hardware purchase, and budget are primary concerns in this decision. Many aspects of day-to-day maintenance and access to CD-ROM sources must also be considered in the evaluation process. These issue-space, security, the care and feeding of hardware and software, reference assistance, staffing and staff training, and user instruction are vital to the success of CD-ROM in the library. Focuses particularly on literature about training for staff and users.

- Abstract
- Describes a WWW based system which allows users to view, search and post geographically indexed information of the Earth. 2 geographic browsers have been developed: a 2D map browser capable of continuous scroll and zoom of an arbitrarily large sheet and a 3D flight-simulator browser capable of continuous flight around the Earth. On the server side, a geographical and geometrical server has been developed which contains large databases of images, elevations, lines, points and polygons stored in tiles structured into hierarchical pyramids or quadtrees. A metadata server has also been developed which contains URL pointers and geographical coordinates of various WWW documents, geographical information and geometrical models

- Abstract
- A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback
